Factory 22/250 neck bushing sizes w/lapua brass?

I have a vintage M700 Varmint Special in 22/250 and ordered some Lapua brass for it. What bushing sizes should I order so I can have everything ready at once?

Ridgeway,

The samples I have here in my desk measure out at an average of about .0135" for neck wall thickness. Given a total neck diameter thickness of .027", and a .224" diameter bullet, we get .251" total. You'll want to run about a thou or two under that, so call it .250" or .249" and you should be good to go. For what it's worth, I genereally want to have at least the next bushing size in either direction, once I establish the "correct" size, just to have some versatility. Just a little something to think about.

.248 and .250 will cover just about any brand of non turned brass, if you light neck turn and use lots of different brands 247, 249 and 251 will cover pretty much everything in the 22-250 world.

Borrow/buy a ball micrometer. Measure the thickness of the neck on your new Lapua brass, should result in three digit number. Multiply by 2. Add bullet diameter. Subract 2 thou. Should get appropriate neck tension, minimal case working. If you must, subtract another thousanth and order that one too. Nice to have a ball mic so when you get new brass you don't have to go begging again.

As i recall most guys were using 250 bushing for the new lapua 22-250 brass. I was using smaller busing for my Win/fed brass but i was going a little to tight. The sucky part about a factory 22-250 chamber is the neck is probably.258-.259 or so, lots of wear on your brass

After measuring a dozen or so rounds loaded with 75 VLD's, the fattest was .2521", with most in the .2515" range.

With magazine feeding, I wouldn't go any bigger than .249".
