F/TR Gun stock material?

Whats heavier a laminate or a walnut stock? I am debating on making one out of Baltic birch or walnut for a f/tr rifle. Also how wide do you guys usually go on the fore end on a F/TR stock?

What would you all suggest?

Thanks

Not 100% and I'm sure someone else will chime in but from my experience laminates are heavier than solid wood.

id say its according to what wood. a laminate is plywood and glue. walnut is pretty heavy comparatively. mcmillan makes a heavy fill and an edge fill. that means several pounds on some stocks.

Straight grain walnut can be pretty light. Lighter than a rutland type dyed laminate. If you can go to a wood supply and pick out the pieces thats your best bet. Wood weight can have huge variations from board to board. If you plan to paint it just use plain birch plywood. Light and strong, very good choice.
