F-TR Equipment - What to use?

Starting to think about expanding into f-tr. Clueless as far as equipment goes.

- scopes? brand? power?
- barrel dimensions? (ie: .3075 x .298)
- barrel contour? (heavy palma?)
- there are a lot of good actions out there. What the "action of preference"? My palma rifle action is an orphan...
- trigger
- stock and stock hardware.
- bipod

This is a buy once, cry once series of questions...

Thank you.

John

1. Nightforce Competition or Vortex Golden Eagle
2. .300x.308
3. Heaviest you can make weight with. Heavy Palma should be good with most stocks/bipods, Heavy Varmit if you have room.
4. Kelbly Fclass or Borden BRM, maybe the new BAT Aluminum if you want to go crazy
5. Bix or Jewell
6. Cerus, Xring, Dimas, Kelbly, Mcmillan
7. Joypod, Phoenix, Duplin

This can be a Rabbit Hole ! F/TR leads to F/Open ? $$$$
I have done very well in this sport by not spending my way to the Top.
Remington 700 SA from PTG under $800 Plus Trigger . Tier 1 By-Pod
Shop for Barrels found deals on this site.

Those Action took me to F/Open and still doing well !
To start out your going to burn up your first Barrel .
Think about a used Rifle ?
Scopes your Eyes will let you know, then all it needs to do is repeat on adjustments .
Two good dealers on the site for Sightron and Vortex .

Reloading Good Ammo is another Rabbit Hole !

Think of a Large Funnel with a non stop cash flow .

It is worth every Dime .

Good Luck let Fun Begin !!!!!!!!!!

EVERYTHING shooting related is a "rabbit hole". I've been shooting competitively for 55 years, Palma/TR (sling) for 25+. In the long run, pretty much everything I won is "old school". I understand not spending one's way to the top, but up-to-date and higher end equipment does enhance one's experience.

An example of dated, I still use a 20X 2 inch Unertl on a Winchester 52E, still competitive, but dated by today's standards.

Mine - which is ever changing
1. Burris XTRll 8-40. or Sightron. Sportsmatch rings.
2. .300x.308
3. Heavy Palma MAB (Australia)
4. Barnard "S."
5. Old Shilen trigger that I have had in the cupboard for ages.
6. Dolphin chassis with a vertical grip.
7. Joypod X.

Are you shooting 600, 1000, or both?

General price range without scope?

Both. I am a member of a club that has a 200 to 1000 yard range. Over the years, I have put significant amounts of money into the sport. Looking at component (action, barrel, trigger and scope) prices, I recognize I'll likely drop $4K to $5K, gunsmith will be an adder for assembly. That's what the likely "entry fee" will be...

Reactions: Dub
Action : Kelby Panda
Barrel : Bartlein Brux , Kreiger .....30" finished
Profile : Heavy Varmit
Stock : Kelby 1M
Trigger : Jewell
Scope : Vortex Golden Eagle - 1/8 MOA - ECR 1
Bipod : Duplin , Phoenix , SEB

I currently shoot with a Kelby factory-built F-TR rifle . It is a Panda , Left Bolt / Left Port . and it is a K-TR stock with adjustable Cheek Rest and adjustable Butt Pad . My suggestion for the Kelby 1M is based on the over-all design of that stock , and Kelby quality . And that gorgeous Red color . Barrels are just as much a "personal preference item as scopes , in my mind . But I have shot all three listed with good results . I chose the Golden Eagle because I saw no real difference between it and some other brands . And it was less expensive than other scopes . Currently shooting off of a Duplin Bipod , and it is a satisfactory piece of equipment .

Borden action with Bix n Andy trigger, Kelbly 1M stock, Nightforce Comp and the longest parrellel barrel you can fit in it. I reckon if you ordered one at 1.2" you'd get a 30" tube in it.

I run Panda F's at the moment with 32" heavy varmint bartliens, but I'm a bit in love with the smoothness and timing of my Borden. If I was starting FTR again that is what I'd run.

Far less than you might think.

F-TR = Masochism
F-Open = Self Gratification

We are kind of fundamentally different.
Self Gratification well I have 50 years of it. Been Shooting and Building Rifles for most that Time.
Just was pointing out cost difference. Zero to F/Open cost more.
Enjoy what ever you do ! Hope it is Shooting.

Great Timing Matt . The list pretty well confirms that the recommendations being made by the members are solid , and supported by that list . So often in other areas , you get a lot of "Keyboard Kommando's" that put out garbage and new shooters waste a lot of time and money on the junk . Really don't think our members and the Forum Boss would put up with that .

Hey John!

First off, there are lots of great folks on here that are more than willing to help; they have helped me and still help me. I can only offer referrals because I am still learning as well.

Last year I made a somewhat similar post to yours reaching out for help. I have copied the link from my post last year, you will find the info helpful; those folks are amazing.

I bought my first "really pretty military green" Bergara, and I am just about ready to shoot my first shooting match and you will be too! The link is below. I tried to delete it, but the forum boss told me he is keeping it up because there is so much great advice there. He's right, I've referred back to it several times.

Good luck!

All 308, very few if any FTR shoot 223 at the long range portion. Steve Siracusa many years back finishing 6th is probably the last long range SWN FTR 223 hero. :D

I did long for my 223 this year at the midrange portion. Conditions were just barely favorable enough I may have been crazy enough to do it.
