F-Open Stock by Bernosky

DE-F-Open

Gold $$ Contributor
I am in the process of building a new F-Open rifle and am considering a different stock configuration.

Does anyone have any experience with Carl Bernosky's F-Open Thumbhole Stock?

I know Carl makes good stocks, but I am wondering about this particular product for F-Open use.

Any observations, experiences and/or suggestion will be welcome.

Thanks,

John

Call Alex Sitman at masterclass stocks, him and Carl do business together. Alex has a few of the same thumbhole stocks he can send you to play with to see if you like it. I will be using that pattern on my next open build. I have the regular F-Open stock now from masterclass and love it. From what I can gather, the thumbhole stock is very similar to the regular f-open stock. Mine rides very well in and is very comfortable to shoot.

Cody,

How well does the fore-end resist torque? I picked up one of the Prone stocks from a prize table, ended up trading with a sling shooter who had gotten an F-class stock (go figure ;) ). The blank is still sitting down stairs while I decide how to proceed with it. My only reservation on looking at it is that the fore-end isn't quite as wide as some, and is rounded vs. flat along the bottom. I figured I could put a bag-rider plate in there if need be. I'm curious what your experience is with it staying stable under recoil/torque?

John,
I would stay away from a thumbhole stock in general. I think that it's way to easy to manipulate the stock if you use the thumb hole. I would look at something other than a thumb hole stock.

I think thumbhole stocks are purely preference. I have an AICS stock for my tactical rifle and absolutely love the thumbhole stock. I think that if I adopted a thumbhole style stock for f-class that I would not have any problems adapting to it and shooing well with it. That being said, I have standard stocks for my f-class rifles and both have been finished by Alex @ Masterclass.

One of them is his, which he modified for me to be more f-class friendly. Added the cheekpiece because I like to use cheek pressure on the stock, made the heel 3/4" wide to ride the rear bag that I have, forend is flat and 3" wide. This tracks incredibly well. I also added a 3-way buttpad because I also put forward pressure on the stock while shooting.

Took 2 months from shipping to Alex and him shipping back to me. Not bad if you consider that 2 weeks are probably transit time.

Get behind as many rifles as you can at Nationals next month. Figure out which one fits you and go from there. Several good choices on the market today as long as you want wood.

If these are for F Open, I would watch the beveled sides. Looks like the front rest is set up to capture the forend.

So that pedestal rest is going to be part of the overall weight of the rifle... I doubt that rig will make weight.
