F CLASS RIFLE FOR SHORT RANGE BENCHREST

Yep,
22 pounds in F-open

10.5 pounds in SR

The good folks at the Vapor Trail Valley developed a benchrest match that combines 600 and 1000 yard targets in a 16 target agg over the course of 3 days with a 22 pound weight limit.

In each of the last two years F-class shooters have made it to the Top 14 shoot off but have not won the gold.

I don't quit understand. Bart Sauter set a record at 600 yards that anyone would be satisfied with at 100 yards. It was .280 and if it had been 100 yards would have been .04. That's some shooting.

Amazing shooter with perfect setup and perfect equipment. Also, one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. There is a high likelihood that Bart has the ability to charm his bullets into the same hole at any distance. Lol

It's not just gentlemenly grace and charm that get all the bullets to follow each other through the same hole. I believe it goes much deeper than that...a few at the top, have the mental power to "curve the bullet," like I saw it on TV ...in slow motion...it's a secret.
And ya don't bring a sporter hunting rifle to a benchrest match an expect to go very far. Every shooting sport in competition has specialized equipment from years of experimentation in competition...on what works...and that is a good place to start. Then do your own experimentationfor you...if it works, share.

I think Bart can curve bullets Ray, I just don’t think he needs to. Lol

Come on guys, it’s not about weight, or stocks, or anything of the sort.

It’s the cartridges.

Arguably, the three most accurate, and precision chamberings are the 6PPC, the 22PPC Short, and the 30BR.
Any of these are capable of agging at a sub .200 level on a regular basis.

There is no long range combination that will do that.

Bart would be the first to tell you that shooting his 6BRA with any of his 103+ grain bullets in a Registered Short Range Match would be an exercise in futility.

F-Class rifles are at a disadvantage in an LRBR match, just as LRBR rifles would be at a disadvantage in an F-Class match. In average to good conditions in an LRBR style match the 6 BRA or 6 Dasher rarely get beat. In average to poor conditions the 30s start to rule. Neither of those cartridges do well in F-Class. The 6s get blown around too much and the 30s recoil too much.

In LRBR we need to shoot fast to keep all our shots in the same condition, and most rifles are dual port to accomplish that. Conversely, a dual port rifle being shot from prone could be awkward.

Remember that in an F-class match you are dealing with wind at long range, and targets have to be pulled and marked after each shot, though some events are now using electronic targets. Pulling targets slows the rate of fire.

Roughly speaking, the rule of the square applies to distance shooting. This means that the effect of 90 degree crosswinds goes up basically with the square of the distance.

This is why F-class chamberings feature long, high-BC bullets. Those bullets can be very accurate, but they do not seem to Agg as well as the shorter bullets that are commonly used by 6PPCs and 30 BRs.

Now, a 22-pound F-Open rifle shooting a short range cartridge could probably do very well in a 100-200 yard match, as long as it could be cycled quickly.

That would simply be a NBRSA or IBS Unlimited Rifle.

Forum Boss: Yes, the F-Class rifle would fit under that rule, but it would not be similar to the rigs commmonly used in Unlimited class. I don't want to suggest that people are actually using re-barreled F-Open rigs in Unlimited class. Instead they are using what shooters call Rail Guns.
