Monte.
I haven't shot at the matches, but the format as I understand it is "shoot and walk" with 5 sighters then 3 strings of 15 rounds per string. They do not have pits or target frames like we normally see. I test there a lot during the winter and it is a very nice place to shoot. You can shoot anywhere from 100 to 1000 yards from the same bench which is very convenient for load development. The also have gongs and other reactive targets at 575 and 1000 yards.

Ah. Walk-n-paste. That explains a lot.

Do they use a separate target for the sighters? Otherwise, how do you tell which are which?

Thanks,

Monte

we ride and paste to 300 yds. after sighters and strings, the sighters are pasted over for the first string, then changed there after.

Does that mean you shoot all your sighters at one time before the first string, and basically get no sighters on subsequent strings? I've seen that done on other walk-n-paste matches, but since I was shooting offhand it didn't really matter ;D

If he runs it the same there as he did at Peru, NY it's 3 sighters in 5 mins. then a trip down range to check them and paste. Then 2 more sighters in 5 mins. and a repeat with a trip down range to check and paste, we have a plot sheet for the 300 yd. target on the back of our score sheets so you can remember what you had for sighters. Then it's 3 strings of 15 rounds in 15 mins. with target changes and scoring in between. At Peru we "score to the right" as to ward off the magic bullets that have appeared, it helps keep everyone level.

I think it's tougher at 300 yds. without pits, your group could be "thight" but off center just enough to be 9's & 10's.

I am curious on what is explained a lot?

Being a shooter that shoots 300meters F-Class I would like to see others point of view on these scores... do you think they are high? Or low?

In my little experience, with no pit work, walk and past is more dificult because the time between shots are bigger and then the wind can change a lot from shot to shot.

Precisely. If those scores were shot on a typical HP range with target pits n flags, my first reaction would be that they would be bit low unless the range has some really snaky conditions. On a walk-n-paste range where you are essentially 'shooting blind'... well I can't say whether it's 'good' or 'bad' for that location.

Some ranges have lighting conditions where they can actually see the bullet holes (at least some of them) in the black with a high magnification scope. Our local one does not... most of the time the target face is slightly shadowed. Shooting 'blind' on those targets is a crap shoot at best.

I have not shot the course at the Range in FL that tallgun is reporting about but have been told that mirage is a killer. I know that member soostan has shot a "clean" 450 but don't remember the X count.

At Peru, NY we are also at the mercy of the mirage as we shoot from flat on the ground with no elevated firing point to the target with the center roughly 26" off the ground, slightly uphill. I can see my bullet holes ( .223 Rem. normally ) in just the right conditions with a Leupold/Premier 20-50 power scope, it's the fact that the backers are are coragated plastic and seal so well there isn't much of a hole to see day light only the torn hole in the paper. We have had a 450-33X ( standing club record ) shot by one of the Open Class guys, I myself have had many 448's and 449's with X counts in the high 20's and low 30's. We held a Registerd Match with many Records broken only to have TournOps at the NRA or the Reporting Offical blew it and none ever made it to the list, never found out the why. These are about average scores for Peru also at 300, we usually don't have a wind problem and we do run a single Wind Flag but it's 30' in the air and doesn't tell you much when your bullet path is at most 30"-36" off the ground.

I think Monte hit it on the head "it's a crap shoot at best" but it's all we got so we do it.........and this year we increased to 35 target frames to handle the load.

Well I've only shot the FClass shoot at Manatee once. I have altho shot their 1000 yard and 565 yard plate shoots many times. The wind there in March when I shot there was a constant approx 18 mph and gusts to 30 mph swirling. We even had targets blown out of the target frames. The wind there can be terrible at times.
