F- class, Finally weighed my rifle/s...

20150804_080503_001.jpg
The gun I was thinking of starting to shoot f-class with came in at 21lbs and some change WITH the bipod on it.. rempel bipod...

6XC

Max weight is 22 lbs for F open? Does the bipod have to be attached to it to weigh it? If not im plenty under then and good to go.. i took the muzzle brake off and put a thread protector in it, and put a single shot sled mag in it...

Looks like im good to go?

I havent ran this barrel further distances, just finishing up load development, left rhe range on this note for the day... matches closest to me shoot 500 yards...

Biggest factor i see is seeing what it does when the barrel gets hot... havent got there yet...

Your rifle must weigh under the weight limit with the bipod attached. It is part of the rifle system, and not a separate piece. If you are at 21lb and change and are under the weight limit for F-open by several ounces then I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you are only an ounce or two away from the weight limit then you might think about shaving some weight where you can. Obviously there are some lighter bipods out there that you could use that would still be very stable.

What you say is true, but the best way to save weight for an F-Open shooter is to simply remove the bi-pod altogether. If it's attached, then it's included in the weight, as you correctly point out. However, bi-pods are required only for F-T/R, not F-Open.

Every F-Open shooter I know (including me) shoots off a conventional front rest which is NOT included in the weight. By the way, the weight limit is 10kg, very very close to 22 pounds, but not exactly.

I could just carry the bipod correct?

My rifle isnt set up for a front rest. Not that kind of gun. Just looking to use it to get started and see how i like f class. A new build and front rest is out of my budget right now...

No, if it is attached while shooting that is how it will be weighed...like XTR says, if it lifts from your shooting position, then it is included in the weight of the rifle...

Very true, forgot to mention that most f-open shooter use a front rest. That being said, with a low recoiling round like 6xc a bipod (especially a heavy one like a remple) could prove to be a good combo, even for f-open.

A bipod is a great way to start. You can always put a tracking plate on later. At Sacramento we have our own sub class, F Tactical, which shoots off a bipod. No real rules other than a bipod. It was made to give the tactical shooters a place to shoot F without having to compete against true F Open rigs. With a good set up it's not as big of a disavantage as it might seem. One guy regulary shoots scores just a couple points behind the F Open winner.

There are several easy solutions. If you have a sand bag available, use that for a front rest. Or, if you have a friend, borrow his front rest if you can't afford one of your own. Or buy a cheap rest. Some might disagree, but I would say a cheap front rest is better than an expensive bipod.

If your gun can accept a bipod attachment, most likely a swivel stud, then you can easily replace that with an appropriate plate. Buy a cutting board at Walmart, cut it to shape, drill and countersink a mounting hole or two, and screw it on in place of your swivel stud; cheap and easy.

You probably should do this mod if you do load development anyway since shooting from a bipod during load development adds another layer of uncertainty to a testing procedure which is loaded with uncertainty and statistical "noise" while you try to tease out tiny changes in performance from data which is almost always more vague than we would prefer.

As someone with a fair amount of trigger time behind various "expensive" bipod, I might disagree ;)

That said, there are some decent inexpensive front rests, like the ones sold over @ bullets.com.

I very much disagree with the suggestion for the rube-Goldberg clap-trap 'adapters'; I've never seen one that wasn't a disappointment. A machined plate that mounts to a fore-end rail, maybe.
