F-Class calibers

For midrange 6 BR variants (BRX, Dasher, BRAckley) and 260AI, 6.5x47, with the occasional 6.5 Creedmoor. For 1K yards the 284 and its variants.
Joe pretty much covered it for the popular/common cartridges.

I think you've overlooked one important thing, John Whidden doesn't shoot F Class.
The accuracy standard needed to competitive in F Class is different than sling. The ring size on a F target is half the size of a sling target. A lot of F shooters tend to shoot pretty fast compared to sling guys and the 243 will get really HOT when shot that hard. Hanging together for 22+ shots and not to mention barrel life under those conditions isn't in the 243's favor. If it were we'd all be shooting them.. While on paper it might seem the perfect case but under typical actual match conditions it's simply the wrong cartridge for the job in F Open.

I think the main reason people don't shoot a .243 is that its' past the point of optimal efficiency. You wind up burning more powder for marginal improvements over smaller 6mms like the XC, Creed, etc. I am unconvinced that the .284 is the only answer, though.

Have a look at the equipment from the Berger SW Nationals. The cartridges are at the bottom. http://www.bergerbullets.com/SW_Nationals/2018-swn-equipment-list-open.pdf

Thanks for posting the equipment list. I do not compete but like to test my skill at long range. Reloading for me is enjoyable and is just one part of shooting accurately. At 75 years of age and living on a fixed income many of the scopes and other items on the list are out of my affordable price range. Due to sciatica I no longer shoot from the prone position but from the bench. I enjoy shooting .22 at 100>200yds, 6br and 6.5x55AI at 200>600yds. Many of the guns I use were purchased either from sellers on this site or from local gun shows. Good deals are not hard to find if you are willing to look, have patience, save and spend wisely. I will continue to shoot as long as I can see and sit at the bench as the satisfaction gained from seeing improvement is rewarding.
