f class and palma

i have never been in any comps and would like to know what is f class and what is palma a know that barrel makers offer barrels in palma contours. do you have to have a special barrel to shoot it or is it just for weight are there any trigger specs or what thanks.

Your best bet is to attend some Matches, watch and learn....you can also check out ALL the rules for NRA Sponsored Tournaments here:

http://www.nrahq.org/compete/nra-rule-books.asp

And GREAT info on the US PALMA Team, US F-Class Teams both F-Open and F-TR here:

http://www.usrifleteams.com/

Palma is iron sights and a sling. F Class is scope sight and a bipod or pedestal.

A Palma match is shot at 800, 900 and 1000 yards. F Class is shot from 300 to 1000 yards depending on the facilities and organizers` preference.

Palma has to be shot with a .308 and 155 gr bullets. In F Class (Open) you can use any cartridge and bullet weight you want, bipod or pedestal. In F/TR you have to use .308 or .223. International rules permit bipod only in F/TR. Don`t know about U.S. NRA rules for F/TR, whether you can use a pedestal or not. Also check NRA rules for allowed bullet weights in F/TR.

Palma, in the US, can be shot with 308 or 223, no weight limit on bullets. But if you shoot fullbore rules or internationally, its 156/81 respectively. I dont shoot F class so I will rely on the others to fill ya in there as they are totally different types of shooting.

Taildrag pointed you our team's website and there is a lot of useful info there. But, like he said, attending, watching and learning would be a great idea, not to mention it will probably get you really interested in trying it out. I wouldnt be surprised if you get suckered into shooting while there! ;)

John,
The bullet weight rule is: International Fullbore 156/81 and for US Fullbore 156/92. The US rule was changed this year from 81 to 92 grains for the 223. I think the Canadian rule is 156/91 for their Fullbore.

F-class has no bullet weight limit in the USA.

For the Canadian Championships this coming August, the DCRA has decided for Target Rifle (sling, iron sight) 156 gr max for .308, no bullet weight limit for .223.

For F/TR must be .223 or .308, any bullet weight, any front rest.

Any front support now in your F/TR? That's an interesting development, but maybe making sense given the ever more complex and expensive 'bipods' being used!

What about F/TR rifle weight in this instance? Does it stay 8.25 Kg for pedestal rest users, or does it drop a bit to compensate?

Opps, yep, forgot about the 92 thing. Now to find one that works! (yeah, I read your stuff on LR forum and just happen to have a 7.5 bbl that I may hook up and try out cause of it).

Laurie, the DCRA is going through a hand-wringing stage now, wanting to fully impliment ICFRA rules but still looking back to the past.

The DCRA is trying to wean some F/TR shooters off their $300 pedestals with 56 adjustments because if they shoot on an International team under ICFRA rules they have to use a bipod.

There is a Canada-only F(F) competition named after "Farky" Farquharson, the DCRA shooter who originated F Class. Up to 2009 this was the Canadian equivalent of F/TR but with restrictions on bullet weights.

The DCRA rule book specifies 8.25 kg including attachments for F(F). Curiously there is no mention of F/TR rifle weight in the recent "Canadian Marksman" journals but I would assume the 8.25 kg rule applies to Canadian F/TR. Without offending the traditionalists, Canadian F(F) and ICFRA F/TR are slowly being blended together resulting in the current hybrid of rules.

The DCRA Target Rifle people are going through a similar transition towards ICFRA, smaller scoring ring size, no rifle weight limit and 0.5 kg minimum trigger weight.
