F class 1000 yard caliber?

What about a .243 win? Lot's of choices on ammo & good data?

John Whidden uses a 243 Win in long range prone competition and does very well with it, but I don't know any top level F-Class competitor using a 6mm in regional or national level competition. Some 6.5s do very well, but most are now using some flavor of 7mm and there are some big 30s from time to time including a 300WSM that won the 2010 FCNC. If you already have a 243 Win and want to try it, go ahead and see if you like F-Class, but if you are building a gun or rebarreling, a 6.5 or 7mm would probably be a better choice.

I already have a Rem 700 .243 with a 26" Hart 10:1 barrel and muzzle brake. Also has Bell & Carson Stock and 2 oz, trigger. Shoots very well to 200 ys with .250' groups. Would this work for F-Class or long range BR? I just want to see if I am going to like the longer distance and get comfortable before making the cost leap.
Thanks

The 10" twist is a too slow for 105-108 class bullets. You might be able to compete fairly well in a Mid Range match using lighter bullets. Muzzle brakes are illegal in F-Class. I don't know about BR.

I use 9" twist for .284 Win and Shehane. Both shoot extremely well with Berger 175 XLD, 180 VLD and 180 Hybrid. My reamers have a .220" freebore but some folks prefer .200".

Some shooters use twists as tight as 8" but I do not understand the need.

THANKS. I was afraid the twist was wrong. Forgot about no muzzle brakes in F-Class.

Very easy to size up,Use (laupa 6.5mmx284) Just load and shoot fire-forming is automatic.

Don't you have to neck up to 7mm first?

Also, 284 is the choice, what twist on the 30" barrel?

Dennis,

Yes, the 6.5-284 brass must first be expanded to 7mm. That is pretty easy to do and I have never lost one. As to twist, as in the previous post, I use 9" twist in a 32" barrel with the Shehane and a 29" barrel in .284 Win.

Where do get the Reloading Dies for the Shehane? Are they custome made? Thx

I think Bill Shehane sells them and may have them in stock. I use a Warner F/L resizer.
