I am posting the below as informational only. It is not meant to be an advertisement of any type but rather informing the community of a location that is unique and satisfies the needs of some of the forum’s membership. If this information is in any way inappropriate, then I invite the moderator to remove it.
Anyone interested in extreme long range (ELR) shooting in challenging conditions should seriously consider traveling to the “West Texas Long Range” facility owned by the Harkins Ranch of West Texas. Multiple targets are located at different bearings from 300 yards to 2701 yards (of course there is a 100 yard distance for zeroing). Your shooting location is high on a hill overlooking several thousand acres located down below. This type of situation can create wind conditions starting out at 0-2 mph working its way up to 14-15 mph with gusts and switching directions in the valley below. You can shoot all day or any part of the day. Jase Harkins is your guide and he can help you with wind calls and spotting or let you do it all on your own depending on your experience level and your desired goals. This is also a very family oriented location and welcomes everyone. Safety is the highest priority.
The targets are AR500 at multiple distances out to 2701. The 2701 target is a particular challenge as it is only 18 inches wide. However, if you let the operators know your wishes ahead of time they are very accommodating and are flexible in setting/moving target sizes. The operators are willing to work with shooters and their skill level and in particular the price is very reasonable for two and a half days of sheer shooting pleasure. For any and all questions contact Jase Harkins (http://westtexaslongrangeshooting.com / jase@harkinsranch.com ). They also organize hunts for long range hunters.
I want to emphasize I have absolutely no affiliation whatsoever with “West Texas Long Range” or anyone associated with this operation. As a matter of fact they are 5 hours from my house and someone else had told me about them. The above blurb is provided strictly as informational and a testimonial not as an advertisement/promotion. If it comes across this way, then I apologize for my enthusiasm and barely containable excitement.
It is difficult for me to find any locations beyond 1000 yards even here in Texas with both challenging distances and wind conditions. Everyone I talk to who is into ELR is always searching for some place that is shooter friendly and has the distance/wind locations to make it all work. For those of you who can drive out into the desert or onto BLM land then you are truly blessed. For the rest of us, we need places like the above without the need to set up heavy targets at multiple distances and without having to worry about injuring some hiker wandering too near targets set up a mile or more away. If you want to shoot ELR and be challenged with varying conditions then look no further.
If anyone would like to post similar locations I am all ears and am sure others would be grateful. ELR shooting way past the transonic transition is increasing in popularity and needs all the support it can get. The more support places like that above get, the more likely they are to stay in existence and possibly grow.
Thanks for listening
Dan
