extreme distance rimfire shooting

we've been doing a friendly little monthly competition on sniper's hide at 100 and 200 using a tq4 and a 3.5' gong at 100 and an a21 and 5x7gong at 200. with my savage mkii and sk match ammo, have been getting -2' at 100 and 5 to 8' at 200,depending on wind) the grey area is the 'simulated gong' as the local range only allows paper. there are different styles to shoot,s these are prone, no rear bag support-just shoulder and hand

with the drop of my .22 at 100, it simulates the drop of MY .308 at 240 yards and at 200, 518 yards, your results may vary

and well, it's just plain fun and good practice to shoot the .22 at those distances, and relly shows up any shooting flaws and is more economical than the centerfire.

with the right ammo for the rifle, it's consistant enough to pick out which shots you 'blew' and what part of your form to work on.

as i can't seem to get better scores / groups out of the mkii no matter what i try, looking now at cz's, as they seem a bit more accurate and forgiving on ammo used, as i had the oppurtunity to run some rounds through one lately.

Id like to start a topic on long distance rimfire shooting basically trying to get the feel for which caliber is the best suited for this application.
Anyone tried this with a 22MAG or 17 HMR considering they're supersonic? Tom

although i don't have extensive 1st hand experience with the .17, the numbers and people that i have spoke to love 'em more than the .22, however they, and the numbers) tell of major wind drift in the slightest of breezes.

with extensive experience with the .22 mag, the only ammo that runs through mine with the most consistancy and predicability is the 30 gr v max hornady ammo.

in my opinion / experience considering price and stability for target shooting 100-200 yards the 22lr provides the best platform in varying weather conditions. for hunting, i'd pick the .22 mag.

Just a little boost here. Just came back from the www.moaguns.com Long-Range shoot up in Sundance, WY last week and we had a priaire dog shoot 2 days before. Took my Ruger Charger along using various ammo and got some 150-yd. 1st shot connections with it. Love the PFI Rapid Reticle system-- www.rapidreticle.com for just this application.--

...just factory for now with a Ron Power trigger, but i'll be getting the factory barrel threaded shortly, just to see if it helps some.

Help me fellas ! Has anyone ever heard of a trigger job on a Marlin Mod 60.?? This particular rifle is very accurate with standard velocity CCI's (blue box 1070's) but the trigger is horrible. No... make that HORRIBLE. A few ten shot groups and your finger has a huge dent in it and it's not much good for about fifteen minutes when you get the feeling back in it. I've had it apart and studied it and it's function and it's only slightly less complicated than the space shuttle. What the hell....who invented that thing ?? I don't even want to take it out anymore but it's so accurate and confidence inspiring that it would be nice to get it going with a normal trigger that doesn't have three seperate creep zones and a ten pnd pull. Anyone ? Please?

It looks like the right hand bullet keyholed, in the upper group.

About 10 years ago I shot 300 yards with my 10/22. The groups were large as I expected.

I went back to 400yrds and fired 10 rounds using various hold overs. Result: No hits.

My guess is that the .22LR starts to tumble past 300yards?

Starting this month, Benton Gun Club will be shooting a 22RF BR Silhouette match with the 1/5 scale animals.

10 of each at the below distances:

Chickens @ 100 yards
Pigs @ 125 yards
Turkeys @ 150 yards
Rams @ 175 yards

We have animals on swinging stands so we do not have to continually walk to distances to reset during a match. We just will repaint between relays.

Challenging but do-able depending on the wind.

I picked up an old Savage single shot bolt action 22lr a few weeks ago from a buddy for $50. It's a little rough with faded bluing and a well worn stock, but the barrel looks pristine when scoped and man does it shoot nice!

I decided to add some wood, fiberglass and bondo to it and make the stock a bit more "bench friendly", so now it has a 3" wide flat fore-end with a butt 1" wide parallel to the front. I also added a CenterPoint 4-14x40 scope and gave it a go at some longer ranges, shooting steel gongs from 100-300 yds in 50yd intervals. I could do pretty well out to 250, with maybe a 60-70% hit rate at 250, but 300 was not so good with maybe 2-3 hits for 10 shots. But I don't think it was too bad for my first time out at long range. It was fun as heck anyway.

I can see why some of you like it so much, as it is a good challenge, and inexpensive as well.
