Extraction Funnies

The chamber must be filthy based on the look of the brass. Had this happen to me on a .222 shooting ball powder. The suppressor will cause back pressure adding too, or causing the problem. Good luck!
Paul

Thanks Paul,

Before I put this barrel on the current action on Saturday I cleaned and cleaned and cleaned it. Its probably the cleanest chamber I had at that point lol.

First shots fired from the rilfe stuck.

Smooth might be a different story though.

Did you dry the chamber after scrubbing it? Solvent/oil in the chamber can allow the case to slide under pressure, and causes all kinds of weird problems (including false pressure readings, and mottled-looking brass as in your pics.)

Yep it was all ready to go when the first rounds were fired.

Just and update on this.....

Lapua brass was what I posted a picture of a few posts back.

It had been fired a few times, I'm thinking about 5 but not 100% sure.

So, I tried some new winchester brass.

I found out a few things.

1) My die was very dirty and had a bunch of crud in it. It was causing some of the deposits on the body of the brass as well as making it look very awful and gritty. So I cleaned that up.

2) The winchester brass will size down better, at the bottom than the Lapua.

3) I took 3 pieces of winchester brass and loaded them, fired and repeated until I got one to stick. It took 5 firings with a stout load before one stuck, and it wasn't bad, I got the bolt open with my hand.

4) The odd thing was my Dad and I both meusured the stuck piece of brass and could only find one spot where it was any bigger than the others, right at the back of the chamber which I'm guessing is causing the binding to occur and creating the stuck case. However only 1 piece was the culprit, the other two were like new.

I believe this to be the issue now after repeated testing and firings but we will see as move forward.
