Explain your "Bench Technique"....

Nodak7mm

Team Lefse
There seems to be alot of discussion on bench technique as it pertains to short range BR & the LV & HV class rifle. In the ever ending search to learn more, I dont see much discussion on the longer range BR & much larger calibers.

So what is your technique for the 600/1000yd BR & F Class matches with the 17.5 lb or larger rifles shooting "larger, more powerful cartridges?

  • Do you hold the butt stock: Tight/loose/away from/against your shoulder?
  • Do you grip the forearm: Tight/loose/not at all?
  • How do you grip the pistol grip area?
  • Do you pin the forearm against rest stop?
  • What else do you do/dont do?

Just wondering what ya'll do?

Thanks

Have you ever been to a match....NBRSA or IBS??...if not you shuld go ....and watch the top shooters ....even the best differ in their methods .....you can learn a lot just observing ...some of the most "educational" days of shooting for me have been just watching and not shooting....I never just sit and veg. out ......you never stop learning till they are throwing dirt in your face.....There is a video on line (maby on here) of a competitor and his tecnique....maby somone can direct you to that link....Roger
PS...your gun will tell you what it likes....the type of "hold" on the pistol grip area that works when bag squeezing may or may not work when using a joystik front rest....and how heavy the rear bag is matters,,,,and how much the bullet/mv/recoil varys.....my BR with a 68gr bullet shoots much different that when using a 105/107 !!!! you just gota tinker with it ...practice practice

Different rifles require different technique and without going into detail and boring everyone with what I do, I'm going to tell you what a great man and great barrel maker Clyde Hart once told me when I was just a pup. He said son anyone can shoot small groups, heck you can even shoot small groups if you're falling off your stool, as long as you fall off your stool the exact same way each time. I know there's a lesson in there somewhere.LOL

Roger,

Thank you for your reply & I wholeheartadly agree with your suggestion. However due to my geographical location, the closest bench shooting is a 500 mile rd trip and the opportunities for me to easily attend are slim (work schedule, family commitments, etc). I do travel alot and research for local shoots, but I tend to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. For example the ND State Hi-Pwr LR matches are being this weekend and I am 1000 miles away vs 180 miles. Lol.... ;D

I 100% agree with your philosophy on learning, therefore I am attemping to learn what I can, when I can & however I can, sometimes discussion on a computer the only game in town.

Again, I sincerley appreciate your reply and advice.

Try talking to the best shooter in your area, he may coach you. There are a lot of books to read but be selective, I feel that some of these guys that write are "want to be's". NRA has pub's on position shooting.

I set up my long range gun just like my short range gun. The video that is mentioned is of Champions ship shooter Sam Hall, it is in the video achieves of this site. I don't change much as far as shooting between the two. My light weight IBS gun weighing in and just under 17 LBS doesn't recoil much, do to the weight, and I shoot a 6x47 Lapua, I am sure the 6BR guys agree. Now if you shooting a 3000 long-en-boomer super magnum, then recoil may be more of an issue.
