Excited...Prairied Dog Shoot

Are you guys excited as I am about the up and coming prairie dog shoots you have planed? One more month and half! I'll be heading West. I may need a new barrel for my Savage when I get back. It has 6 trips on it now. Is there a place on this site that tells you how to change a barrel on the Savage? Step by step.

Buy a spare and I'll bring my action clamp and barrel nut wrench I plan on swapping a barrel at least once when we get out there If I can pick up a .223 barrel and bolthead before then. ;D

Hi Partner,
I've got all my money laid away for the trip. No money for barrels at this time. I hope you get a bolt face and barrel. I would like to see you change one. Try Sharp Shooter Supply.

May you have a great trip. Sounds like you will be sharing expenses with others. Good thing.

I'm planning on towing my toy-hauler trailer to Wyoming in late June and try also. Me alone with the wife doing shotgun. Will have to do all the driving and pay all the bills. Figuring $2,500 for fuel alone.

Expensive dogs. Sure hope I get a shot, unlike the last two times out when I got nothing. May you literally "kill'em".

I'm hearing you Martin! The preparations are all made here. The handloading is complete, and the maps procured. All that remains is one more trip to the range to check the scope zero and then wait impatiently for June to come!

All the best,
Jason

Martin S.......if you want to know everything there is to know about a Savage and how to change or modify anything go to www.savageshooters.com

Thanks for the reply guys. captainmal...I hope you have better luck this year. That drive from Florida is bad enough with out getting to shoot some dogs. Have you got a new place in WY. to shoot? Are you committed to shooting in WY.? Ask here on the for tips on where to go. I'm going to NE. but I can't tell you where. My friend thats going to guide us lives there and he might get upset if I told where. It will be all free shooting. I have 100rds to load then I'm ready to go.

This is the place my buddy and I will go to shoot 'P-Dogs' this year. Living over here on the Northwest side of Montana just outside of Kalispell, we don't have Prairie Dogs or Antelope. Sooo, we have to make that trek to the 'east side'. And, most of what used to be open country over there is all leased or purchased by out of state folks. Makes it pretty tought these days to just drive somewhere, get out and start shooting. On top of paying for the shoot, I think it will be something like a 10 hour drive from where I live just south of Glacier Park to Ingomar. That's a hike just to go shoot some little furry critters. Fortunately we have a friend that has several sections of land just outside of Shelby Montana that they use for pasteur and it is invested with Gophers. That gives us a place to shoot that is a lot closer to home. Still a 4.5 hour drive.

Ahhh, the cost we pay for our little pleasures of shooting. :)

Martin,

A fellow on this forum, 5Spd, gave me some ideas on where to hunt in Wyoming. I just got a map for the area and will look at it tonight. He also offered a contact with more detailed information when/if I get through Cheyenne on the way.

Hideous fuel costs. We are towing a camping trailer with Harley Davidson inside. If no hogs we ride one. Actually plan on a few days for me to hunt. Wife does not hunt but likes to shoot. Then move to the mountains of Colorado and ride motorcycle for a week.

Gotta have plan B. My last two times I did and that's what saved the trip. Know it's hard to find a place to get a shot if you are "outsiders" like us.

Now if you want to grouper fish in Tampa Bay...

Look on Google Earth for places. You can see the holes. Then look them up on your map. Some times the place where there are a lot of holes won't be there anymore. They've poisoned them or something killed them off. I know what you mean about gas. It's $3.89 here now. Much more and we are talking $100 for a fill up.

+1 for Google Earth research. Spend some time here and make sure you have the latest version. In addition make sure you are viewing the latest imagery. Some places I've found show 2005 imagery, when 2009 is available. You just have to slide the bar over all the way to the right.

What Martin says is right - even with the latest imagery you can show up and the town is all but vacant. That's ok - remember it's just a tool to know where to start looking. From there start knocking on doors, asking around. The locals will know where to point you. Treat them and he land with respect and you'll have a place to hunt vamints, and maybe even big game come fall.

Before going to Google Earth, for the state of interest, check out their game department web site. Some of them will show areas of PD concentration, albeit at a coarse scale. From there, you know where to start researching on Google Earth.

That's my method, for what it's worth.

Good shooting!

Jason
