Estimate on 22-250 barrel life?

Hello folks,

I am getting quite a few rounds down the tube on my old 22-250. Just wondering, when do people start replacing barrels on this round? It's a factory Remington barrel, if that matters.

Thanks
Matt

How many is quite a few. My Win Heavy Varminter has about 4500 and will still shoot under half an inch. My feeling is get a barrel when it stops shooting you replace the barrel.

Depends on your standards of accuracy and factors related to load. I shot out two on a 40X action but each took a decade of serious groundhog hunting and shooting into the 3-4,000 rd. range.

#3 is on now but I moved to Florida where the gun has only a single prairie dog hunt and 600 rds. Hope I live long enough to shoot it out also. No groundhogs or really any varmints here.

Not sure what your standard for accuracy is but 22-250's can be hard on barrels, especially if you get them overly hot from rapid firing strings. With reasonable care and avoiding the heat, I don't think the caliber is that hard on barrels frankly. Decide what your standard is and re-barrel when you fall below that mark. Remember, quality barrels aren't all that expensive. Shoot and have fun. It's just money.

I have 2,209 rounds through mine, Rem 700 Varmint with the original factory barrel.

Mine still shoots approx 1/2 moa however I've never push max loads out of it. Most of my loads have been in the middle range of loading data which seemed to give me the best accuracy.

Most serious shooters would have pulled the factory barrel to begin with...

Lots of versatility potential with .22-250rem, but 1:7 or 1:8 twist barrel needed to shoot heavy match bullets. Probably have a 1:12 or even 1:14 twist barrel on your Remington.

If happy, shoot it until your groups begin to open up. If want to really see what you can do with a new barrel, why wait?

Trailboss and a 35 grain bullet at least a half a million rounds or more. Ive got a 223 barrel I had rechambered after a ton of rounds to 22-250 and man ive put at least 1800 more down it and always load 1 grain less than BOOK MAX which always sends turtles into orbit lol....But it still holds 4 inches at 300 no issues with 52 Grain SMK I think mines a 12 twist...I shoot H4895 in it. I have no idea what the speed is. Borescope would be pretty good to check things out Sir. If you can get the barrel off I use one of those things you look in kids ears I get at WalMart and man it magnifies and shows a darn good idea whats going on in the throat.
