ES and SD @ 600 and 1k

Bottom Fodder

You people shooting Shoot marker or other E targets that gives the @ target ES and SD how does it compare with your close to Muzzle Chronograph ES and SD
Just curious

The numbers displayed on the Shotmarker are not very accurate. Just a slight breeze that moves the backer board a fraction of an inch can distort the velocity and then the ES and SD numbers by a wide range.

For example, here is a target from a few months ago and matching data from my Labradar.

That’s really great shooting. I need to find some of those low ED bullets.
They are not low ED bullets...David just coats the bore with a Sildenafil slurry after cleaning. The barrel is effectively stiffened and can be said to be low ED;).

Given that BCs of any bullet in a batch can vary by a couple of percent, which would show up 600 yards down range as a higher dispersion, I don't see the on-target SD as being out of line with the at-the-muzzle SD. Am I missing something?

Catfur, you bring up a good point. Maybe this is an unrelated question. Since powder is now measured to a fine degree, and bullets sorted to a fine degree, since it is out of our control to quantify, is the barrel the ultimate arbiter of accuracy? Assuming of course, the gunsmith and shooter are capable.

I will add agreement to the comments of the others. The SM numbers are valuable, and like many have mentioned they are affected by downrange conditions.

When the target distances are longer, the dispersion in the bullet drag numbers usually means the spread will be wider as time of flight increases. So it is very normal to see downrange stats that are not equal to muzzle stats in ES/SD. The full flight radar trackers show this behavior very well, so it isn’t a new question. Each projectile has a chance to have a variable drag, and a variable atmosphere to fly though.

Wind and weather conditions play two roles. We are not shooting in wind tunnels or labs, so direct effects are expected on the aerodynamics. In addition to weather effects on the flight stats, gusts hitting the target boards shaking the microphones adds to the problem of using the target microphones to sample just the short distance between the two sensors.

Tracking radars measure the entire flight, while SM can only see the shock wave timing between the two sensors on each microphone stand. So in the end, the speed at the target is still valuable, but one must take it with a grain of salt.

Good discussion and Good talking points
My thinking was this data could be use to analyze the performance of maybe the bullet it’s self Against the elements along the fight path. @ muzzle ES , SD
Can tell you a lot about your load and loading practice but how much can it tell you about bullet down range performance. Just thinking out load

I would say the shooter is
