I've heard H414 and Win 780 are the same powder just different label, was curious what would be the equivalent for Win. 748 if there is one. Thanks ???

You're thinking of 760, which is identical to H414.

I cannot find a Hodgdon or IMR powder which appears to be identical to either 748 or 780, browsing Hodgdon's interactive online data center.

Guys, the it seems obvious to me anyway that the OP wanted to know if the same powder was also sold under a different label, not suggestions for powders in the general burn rate neighborhood. (I'm sure the OP will correct me if I'm wrong, but the question should have been put differently if I am.)

Yes brians356 you are right, Thought there may be another Hogdon powder like H414 that is relabeled Win 760 actually the same powder, so I called Hogdon Powder this mourning and talked to one of their Techs. to see if there was another Hogdon powder relabeled for Win 748 and there is not, some close but different ;)

Accurate sold some "748 Data powder" (forget the number off hand) some years back. I believe it was Mil-Surp. pull-down and came in "milk" jugs or 100# kegs. It's a finer "ball" but different than H-335 or BL-C2 (older BL-C maybe?). I've got maybe 2-3# left from a buddies purchase. It'll load + or - 1-2 grs. of 748 Win.

Saint Marks and Hodgdon gives these as alternatives

WC844 = H335 ( surplus is SMP735)
WC846 = BLC(2) , W748
WC852 = H380
WC860 = H414, W760
WC870 = H870

not that any given lot of each is directly interchangeable but those are the “feedstocks” for the various canister grades. Hodgdon has said that W748 and BLC(2); H414 and W760; respectively were fundamentally interchangeable.

That's interesting. I have quite a bit of SMP 735 and my lot is a bit faster than the H335 that I have used in the past. It is a little temperature sensitive but meters nicely. Like H335, is shoots really well in 223 loads.

To original poster. People are giving W760 as an equivalent to W748. As you probably know and according to a burn rate chart from November 2019 W748 is 9 places hotter than W760. Twenty five years ago I mistakenly put 45.2 gr of W748 in my 22/250 Imp due to a brain fart instead of W760. The W760 powder ran a 55gr bullet 4064FPS with no pressure. Below is a pic of the first shot of the 748 load. Welded case to bolt, broke extractor, ect. That used to be a large rifle primer.. Rem 700 luckily, and was wearing shooting glasses as usual. No way I would substitute that powder. Be safe.

I agree with your chart but wc860 is a pulldown 50 bmg surplus military powder and not at all like h414, w760, when hodgdon discontinued h-870 I used wc860 as replacement in 7rem mag with 175gr core-lokt.

That was a sad day!!!
