Here is the deal.
1. There are dozens of other sites where the principal focus is gun-related political topics. Those who need to condemn the "non-believers" and "howl at the moon" can do so to their heart's content on those other sites.
2. The constant barrage of one new thread after another has been choking the top-level sub-forum, pushing other actual shooting/markmanship topics aside, and requiring me to spend hours a day to try to restore a sense of order.
3. Typically, within 6-7 posts, the "hot-button" threads degenerate because one fellow attacks other posters' opinions or lack of perceived "gun rights zeal". Basically it comes down to "you don't love the Second Amendment as much as I do, so you should shut up and suck eggs." The same personalities keep doing this over and over again, and frankly, I am getting fed up.
4. These threads are a classic case of "preaching to the choir". We are all here because we are involved in the shooting sports and we all support gun rights. If people REALLY wanted to help the cause, they would be making COGENT, RATIONAL, and COMPELLING fact-based arguments to try to change the opinions of NON-gun-owners and others in our society who don't understand the need for gun freedoms. Logically, that means getting on OTHER boards and making your case there, not here.
5. The single best practical thing we can do to help secure our long-term firearm rights is to introduce new people to hunting and shooting sports, NOT alienating potential new shooters with divisive rhetoric or threatening statements.
6. I have received dozens of emails from Forum members imploring me to lock down one thread after another. Many long-term members have stressed that they feel that they will be berated or "called out" if they post on a "hot topic" thread at all, because those with the extreme opinions condemn other forum members whom they perceive as "compromisers".
7. Having worked 7 days a week for more than EIGHT YEARS to build this site and help it establish a reputation for a high level of reasoned and well-informed discussion, the last thing I want is for this place to become a free-for-all -- a "gunners' version of Democratic Underground".
8. A major shooting website, SnipersHide.com, was recently hacked by a sophisticated and concerted attack by anti-gun hackers. With every new "rant and rave" thread that "throws down the gauntlet", we only make this site more of a "prime target" for such attacks.
As a last point, let me be perfectly clear. I am getting truly fed up and the next step is to ban members who have shown they are incapable of acting in the best interest of the vast majority of Forum members.
