Elk Hunting 7 Remington Mag / 150 gr. Barnes TTSX / UPDATE

Getting ready to load the Barnes TTSX 150 grain bullet for a 7 MM Remington Magnum for the first time... Anyone have experience? I am going to N Mex. in October for a first time rifle elk hunt. Wanted to try the Barnes TTSX 150 grain bullet. Would anyone care to share their opinions of that bullet, favorite powder, seating depth or any other information? I have WW cases, Fed 215 match primers, and some IMR 4831 as well as a little RL 22 on the shelf. Any and all information would be appreciated as this is my first time to try the Barnes bullets.

UPDATE...UPDATE...UPDATE
I have loaded the 150 TTSX bullets and find them to be very consistent and very accurate using 63.5 grains of RL 22, Winchester cases (several firings), Fed 215M primers. Looks like the starting seating depth of .050 off the lands is going to be the most accurate although i've shot one group at .644" seated at -.060. Velocity is around 2970 fps out of my 24 inch Douglas barrel. I have been extremely pleased with these Barnes bullets as far as accuracy goes. I find them more acurate than my old favorite, Nosler Ballistic Tips. Have not seen them perform on game but everyone says they are top notch bullets. Only downside that I see; they are more expensive than the ballistic tips i'm used to working with so I try not to waste shots.

Thanks for all of the comments here and please keep them coming.

I don't have any load data at hand but I do have a Barnes manual . If you don't find an appropriate load, PM me & I'll look some up for you. You will love the TTSX's. Great bullet & enough bullet for anything you will run into.

I use RL-22 in my 7MM Rem Mag with Barnes 140TTSX's and Fed. 215 GMM primers. For a hunting rifle I seat the bullets so they still go into the mag but long as possible without causing feeding issues. You will like the Barnes TTSX for its very good knockdown power and good accuracy as well.

Missed this one the first time around!
I use Reloader 22 also - around 68 gr. for 3150 fps w/ Norma brass, 215M primers. Barnes always recommends starting at least .050" off the lands and I have had great results with that advise. My brothers Win. Featherlite likes them .250" off! Strange but true. The old Win. factory Fail-Safe loads had very short OALs.
I have had good results on elk and boar with the above load.
Have fun!

I have used Barnes TSX and TTSX bullets to take several hundred animals and it is by far the best bullet I have ever used in 65yrs. of hunting and reloading.
Develop an accurate load, not hard to do with the TTSX, know your range and wind, place your shot in a vital area and the TTSX will do the rest. Don't forget your high elevation and the shot angle. Then make up a bullet path cheat sheet in advance.
Good luck on finding a nice bull.

it's been a few year since I used 160 TSX in my 7 rem mag . I used RL22 powder , WW cases , FED215 primers . I started with a .050 jump , which wasn't bad , and worked away . I think my best was around .060 or .070 jump . it also seemed the faster I pushed them the better they grouped . accuracy was not hard to find with these . Jim

If you like using a powder measure, try Ramshot Magnum and Accurate Mag Pro, both are ball powders and will beat the velocities you will get with H4831 or R22. I have been using both lately in several cartridges with great success. Haven't tried the Mag Pro in a 7mag yet but it is a dream powder in a 7WSM as is Magnum. Getting 3100 with 180 Bergers.

Wish they would give us 160 and 175gr BT TTSX for the 7mm Mag... Even better Elk medicine IMHO

Not sure they are, the 150s will go all the way through an elk on anything but a stem-to-stern shot. The X bullets can be too much of a good thing. I have killed more that 10 big bull elk with 165 grain X bullets of various vintages and have never recovered one- they ALL punched through. With that bullet, you have to be sure that there is nothing behind your intended target or you are likely to get a twofer!

If the Barns don`t preform for you try using Nosler partitions. They worked well on the 5 I killed with them.I also used them to kill a Orex In NM.They are tough animals with very tough hides.None of the bullets went Thur but all made a real mess inside .Most drooped in their tracks only two went about a 100 yards before they drooped

Thanks for all of the good information. I've had some issues that have kept me from load development but i plan to start on Tuesday after the Labor Day Holiday. Hope to get it done before bow season opens! Thanks again.

@ watercam...the load that you are speaking of is using 140 grain Barnes TTSX bullets right?
