Elevation travel??

Was wondering for those who have Sightron SIII 10-50x scope and 20 MOA base and Burris Sig Zee rings how much elevation do you have left in your scope at 1000 yards?

I have the 10-50x, EGW 20 MOA base, Burris Sig Zee rings with 10 inserts. Inserts are installed properly too to get the most added MOA for me.

I made sure my scope travel was centered and then began to get a 100 yard zero. From there I have 31.5 MOA elevation travel left. I have been having issues at 1000 yards with running out of elevation. This is the same number of MOA left in scope with my other load that was out of travel at 1000 yards. So I am assuming I will run into same issue with this load

**My old load that ran out of elevation was Berger 185 LRBT running 2755 fps. I was 1-2 MOA low at 1000 yards and have been holding at the 9/8 ring at 12 oclock to shoot. **

Andrew, I was having the same issue with my N.F. at 1000 while shooting Blakley. I shoot the same bullet at just a little faster then you. During the cooler months I'm out of adjustment, this past Sept. I had 1 MOA left to the top ( higher temps ). The day after I got home I called M.Werks and asked if he had any bases with more then 20 MOA in them. He told me he had to look and that he may have a 25 MOA there. He did not have one, but would make me a 25 or 30 if that is what I wanted. We talked for a minute and he asked me why I just didn't shim the base. We'll I always new I could, so I did. I bed all my bases anyway. I took the 20 MOA Farrell off, cleaned the old bedding off, cut a .012 shim from the bottom of a soda can, placed it in the rear, and rebedded it. I picked up 7.5 MOA at 100 yards. I have not shot this combo at 1000 yet, but everything else shows that I should be about 5-6 MOA below the top. It's an option. I believe Savage barrels and barrelnuts can rob you from some adjustment, which I'm O.K. with because I shoot mostly Savages... ;D

Have you ever shoot anywhere else and NOT run out?

I just can't figure it out. Scope has 461 clicks total travel. I put elevation in the middle and sighted in at 100 yards and was 3 moa low. Add my 20 moa base abd my inserts are set up to give me 22 moa. So that is way more than the 30 moa all ballistics programs are showing my come up.

Am I missing something in my moa calculations?

461 clicks x .125 = 57.675
57.625 divided by 2 = 28.8125
28.8125 - 3.0 = 25.8125

I ran your numbers on JBM and came up with 30.8 MOA. from a 100 yard zero to 1000 yards.

Now, what am I missing?

Nope those are the same #s I came up with. Now add in a 20 MOA base and with my 10 inserts and the rings space 3.190" apart(this should give me roughly 22.5 MOA) that is 42.5 MOA external elevation added to the scope correct?

Once again am I just missing something here?

Andrew, if you mechanically centered your scope and took 3 moa out to get a 100 yard zero, you would have around 31.8 moa left. I've read and been told when you get towards the top of the scope adjustment the travel is not as much.

Since I shimmed my base I put it on a .223 I've been shooting at 600 yard F/Class, at the bottom of my scope adjustment I'm sitting with a 235 yard zero with a 75 grain Amax. I have not shot the .308 at 1000 yard F/Class since I shimmed it, but I zeroed it at 100 and know I added 7.5 MOA. Yours sounds like you should have plenty.

With a 20 MOA base by itself you should not be having this problem, however I'm wondering if you installed the inserts in the Zee rings incorrectly. Could you tell us what they are for the front and rear ring?

Denys they are -10 on bottom front and +10 on bottom rear. Everything has been double checked. Also my rings are spaced 3.19" CTC which SHOULD give me 22 moa extra

Even called Burris to verify how to get most out of the rings

I had a set of Burris inserts that were labeled backwards. Gave me fits until I figured it out.
Measure the middle of the insert. The +10 should be about .020 thicker than the -10.

Bill this is interesting. I measured the -10 inserts with mic and calipers and came up with the same measurements pretty much for both. Then I did the same for the +10 inserts. They too measured the same for both.

Now the +10 inserts from my measurements were only about 2.5 thous more than my -10 inserts.......

Andrew, I think you may be getting to the bottom of this. No pun intended.

Called Burris and tech person verified they should be about 20 thous difference between the +10 and -10. He went and got another pair and measured them for me before shipping and they were spot on 20 thous difference

That is solved. But like someone else said even with just my 20 moa base I should be fine. So going to triple check that and possibly call EGW

Andrew I hope you figured it out by now... I have the same setup on my savage 20moa egw base but with Burris tactical rings. I have about 8-10 moa down from 100 yard zero depending on which bullet I shoot. And at blakey i have shot a couple loads that need 38 minutes and never came close to running out. And even had a good bit of wind on it that match. My current load that I mainly shoot is 32 minutes and I have plenty left... Hope you got it by now. Matt

How much down at 100 do you have? Your barrel may be pointed in a funny direction from the lug nut or stock... Action even.

the inserts are not 10 moa. it depends how far apart your rings are how much cant they have

Matt not sure yet. Sightron has my scope to make sure nothing is wrong with it internally

I should actually have more than the MOA stated because I space my rings accordingly

Where mechanically is windage? The further windage gets dialed away from mechanically centered the more it’ll take mechanically from elevation’s adjustment range.

not sure.

Sightron has scope and is going to test everything and verify every part of scope is working properly. Said he is going to do 40 shots testing in the lab and then if everything checks out he is going to test a few at the range to make sure it is working properly

UPDATE

Sightron did thorough inspection in the lab and also at the range. Said everything checked out and tracked perfect and had full range of travel. So that is a good thing. Nothing wrong with the scope

After sending the scope off I found out the burris inserts were not labeled correctly from Burris. All my inserts were -10. There was no difference in thickness so I believe that is what was causing my troubles. They sent me a brand new set of inserts and hope to get to the range to make sure this is the fix to my "issue"
