Electronic targets 1st time

Well day 2 of 3 and im hooked. The silver mountain targets and software are 98% awsome, but my back is stiff from not lifting target frames, the amount of less confusion on the line seems to be huge. love being able to zoom your hits in to actually see where your hit was. I came into this match being nervous and it took about ten mins to adapt and enjoy.
The only protest i have is that the NRA needs to set a rule to eliminate the machine gun effect of those few shooters who should actually be shooting bench rest ten shot groups in 30 seconds, I will not hesitate to sign up for another silver mountain equipped match. Also want to compliment the highly efficient ran match at Malabar FL. You guys and girls rock!

Nice to read about your experience with the targets there. I know maybe 5 shooters there with you now. They all like the way it operates.

As for the "machine gun" shooting ... it's a product of benchrest paper shooting and conditions. Actually, it's a good strategy to keep shots into the same conditions. But, having said that, I flat out HATE the procedure.

They must not have used a delay. I believe the NRA rules for et's says there should be a delay if possible. The SMT targets have that capability. It should have been used.
Thats funny. Do you actually wait for the delay or just spit em ????

You didn't say how many yards it was? Some ranges if you don't get them down there in 30 seconds you lose. Some conditions I can read, but a boil or diagonal kill me every time. How accurate are they. Do they have paper behind to compare the two?

We run SMT targets for CIHPRS matches at Atterbury. The NRA rule says if practical (or to that effect) the 7 second delay should be used. It does not say you have to. I talked with Wayne we have the latest version of the software for our G2s and it isn't there so not an option. So we are not running it. The Lodi system did have that in it but that is different software. A way to force people to stop machine gunning is have them pair fair. Some of our shooters want to do that for pratice.

Still seem to think this is going to speed up a lot of things, and as far as the seven second delay and include 1 extra sec to pull the trigger still only puts it at176 seconds. I guess with this style of shooting might bring some br. Shooters into fclass?
As for my opinion this will take the chances of equal scoring and give some a gain in ranks, and for people like me just won't care to be at that kind of level of rapid scores and actually give me more time to focus and work on my deliberate shots.
For me I am pleased with this new change in the sport and think it will bring a few new rules in the future.

Please shoot the e-targets as much as possable and than take notes and opserve what is going on that you like and what should be changed if anything . than write the NRA high power committe with your thougths.and they will be considered

I had shot the MR and most of the LR at Lodi last year and just shot the recent OBR at the Port Malabar club range. First I must mention how well the OBR match was run. Good people doing a great job.

Both were held using the SM e-targets. I have in the past and still will shoot as fast as the conditions will allow. I am trying to be more deliberate lately and try to learn when NOT to shoot. I was in attendance at a shooters meeting with the NRA high power representative at Lodi last year. Estimate there were about 40 in attendance. For the most part I estimate the breakdown as follows:

10% want no delay between shot fired and screen display.

80% want some delay 7 to 10 seconds seemed like the sweet spot, equaling some of the best target pull times.

10% want a longer time, in line with the high power rule in keeping with the maximum pull time about of 20 seconds.

A good suggestion was to have an icon flash on the screen that a shot was recorded, the value and location would be delayed the agreed upon time. It gives the scorer some feedback to help determine any cross fires. I am strongly in the 80% camp regarding some delay.

I also shoot long range bench rest and am comfortable shooting a Dasher 10 rounds in well under 20 seconds. That seems to be the best strategy in that game. I do not want to see f-class turn into the same game and will follow Earl’s advice and contact the NRA high power committee. Regardless of your opinion on this matter we all should speak up. I heard a rumor that the NRA is considering a separate rule section, JUST for f-class. I sure agree with that move.

I've been shooting competitively for over 50 years. Never shot e-targets until last year; at Atterbury, which used instant shot marking. Being an older shooter, I now cannot maintain a comfortable shooting position for more than about 10-12 minutes. This "instant" shot marking of e-targets does allow me to shoot faster, and especially so if I have a slow puller. Electronic marking your target very quickly doesn't mean you HAVE to shoot very quickly. This actually provides a shooter even more time to evaluate conditions before the next shot. If you don't want to shoot quickly, you don't have to. But, if a condition hangs around, you can get more shots off. And so can all the other shooters, if they care to. Sorta reminds me of the days of trapshooting (early 60s) when traps weren't interrupted, and savvy shooters learned to read the traps. Many trapshooters were unable to learn this, and complained, as being unfair. So, to make a "level" playing field for everyone, interrupters were installed. This is how I view the instant shot display of e-targets. Those that can benefit from that will do so. Those that want to wait longer, can simply do so. It all boils down to individual preferences.

Good comments gibrass, but even with adding the 7 seconds between the shot being recorded and displayed. You could easily be done shooting in less than 3 minutes. Not too long. Along with you, I have also been shooting competitively in NRA events for 50 years and do not just jump up after 10 min prone:(

My focus was on not fundamentally changing the sport. F-Class is one of the few high power games gaining in attendance based on the deliberate placement of shots based on ever changing conditions.

If a NO delay is finally accepted by the majority of shooters I will adjust my equipment to remain competitive. I enjoy the sport the way it is. A simple time delay will let us enjoy the benefits of e-targets, without changing the way we shoot.

There have been a few threads debating the pros and cons of e-targets. May be time to keep the conversation going.

SMT's use actual target faces. The KTS system uses a big black dot. At Atterbury we put up the circle aiming blacks. We don't have enough wind to need to hold off in the 6 or 5 rings. This also makes shooting irons easier as you have black on actual white. I agree with Jeff I personally don't see the need for a 7 second delay. For the 2017 it IS NOT in the rule book. On the NM forum Walt Walters eluded to it, but Sheri said it is not. Usually the people who machine gun fire sling or f-class aren't your top shooters to begin with and if they gain anything in one match by it they'll get burnt in more matches doing it. Also as a side note we sling shooters also worry about shot placement in ever changing conditions too :)

I agree very much so with Herman, anyone might have a good day playing belt fed bench rest. But the good mind and fine skills of watching the conditions switch, that kind of shooter will know when to hold back and have less chances of the 1 or 2 or more poorly navigated rounds fired down range.
That also brings up another question of crossfire, I hate those things and we all have done it, or had it done to us, Just really hate it when the same person habitually seem to find your target, with electronic targets it will take approximately 2 mins before it's corrected and you can get back to running your string. Just wanna say to all please stay focused and try to remember your number and limit your hindering of other shooters!
