Electronic ear plugs

I'm looking to get a set of electronic ear plugs for hunting. I did a little research but wanted to see what some of you guys were all using with good results. All my rifles have muzzle brakes, so I'd like to be able to still hear the normal sounds, but block out the shots. Seems like there is a ton of mixed reviews out there, and I just want to know what to get the first time around if I'm going to be spending $100-200.

How about a Fuel filter instead?

I've thought about it over the years. I honestly just prefer brakes as long as you have hearing protection. I carry ear plugs with me while hunting and usually have time to put them in while setting up for a shot on deer and elk. I was thinking mainly just for coyote calling it'd be be beneficial to get a nice pair of electronic plugs.

I had a pair of Axil that worked pretty well but the ear pieces never fit well. Lost them in Africa and didn't replace them. I guess I liked the concept but the fit was awful.

I have a set i bought from the company my hearing aids came from. Yes they are A LOT spendy but I will never use anything else. Custom molded to fit your ear. the company name is Sound Gear.

I have custom molded ones and I recently picked up a set of Otto Noizebarriers.

The custom ones are nice, but they are hard. If I'm shooting alone, they are ok. But I was wearing them once and sitting very close to another shooter with a VERY loud brake and I had to get my over ear muffs out of my range bag and double up. It was more the concussion from the brake though, I think.

I was wearing my Ottos that last time at the range and for some reason - even though I was the only one there when another guy showed up.... and I was setup almost all the way to one side. he still decided to setup right next to me and sight in a new AR. I bought after market foam tips for the Ottos and they worked great. No issues at all.

I will second the purchase of aftermarket foam tips. The foam tips Otto provides are really really good, but I bought some Comply Canal Tip Plugs for the Ottos from Comm Gear Supply and they are fantastic.

I have happily used my custom fit ESP's for about 22 years... had to send them in once due to me not opening battery compartment after use in rain, totally my neglect. Repairs cost me only $100.00.

They cost quite a bit more than what you indicate you want to spend, but if they crapped out tomorrow, I'd order another pair in a heartbeat. fwiw.

Same here. I have the Comply tips. I've bought them for just about any in ear bud that I have. Seal way better and are much more comfortable.

I tried a set of Walkers, they didn't fit and the response from the company was totally unsatisfactory. I still use the amplified regular attenuators, if others are shooting I double up with foam plugs. I use hearing aids full time, so I need the electronic amplification for commands at the range.

I have Walkers and the right bud wasn't charging correctly, I tried everything to make it right and couldn't. I purchased ISOTunes Sport BT and love them. I believe that the foam plugs are Comply.

I use Etymotic Gun(something) Pro's (Sorry, don't remember the name.) I've had them for 7ish years, and they're still going strong. Downside is that they use hearing aid batteries, though I think they may have rechargeables now. I replaced the foam on their foam eartips with a pair of soft foam earplugs (hole punched through the length, then contact cemented onto the silicone core); makes them much more comfortable, though it does reduce sound transmission for normal sounds a bit.

My buddies all went to Axil Pro's when they first came out; I don't think any of them lasted a year.

The Otto'z may be the next ones I try, should the Etymotics die. A friend thinks pretty highly of them.

From looking at the reviews. The recharable Otto's only last 1 to 4 years. They cant be fixed or have their battery replaced. I'd really love a pair, but thats a big cost for something that only lasts a few shooting seasons.

I coyote hunt fall through spring. I tried 2 different types of electronic protection. The walker muffs are nice but some wind picks up and the cancle out. I could hear the call but not even a vehicle if they drove by kinda close. Got in ear Caldwells. Never cut out with wind but could not hear crap. I bit the bullet and bought a supressor. No regrets on my part. While yes i know not completely hearing safe it sure helps on bolt action rifles. Still loud if you use an AR.
