Electronic Ear Plugs

Which electronic ear plugs are you guys using? I normally use foam plugs and they work great but I can't communicate well with them. I have a walker electronic headset and they work fantastic but I find they get in the way.

I was looking at the Etymotic GSP-15 but wanted to see if anyone used them or recommend something else since they are expensive

I just bought two sets of walker electronic muffs to loan out to people who are shooting with me that don't have them. They are pretty nice, a little slimmer, but I prefer my old set of Peltor one's though. They are larger, and more like a set of David Clarks, but I prefer them. The walkers were $50 a set, the Peltors were close to 200, ten years ago. They may be cheaper now.

Edit: sorry I missed the part where you said you had regular muffs and found them to be too big.

Yea I have the electronic muffs and they are great that's why I'm considering the electronic ear plugs I like that they cancel the noise well but I can still hear everything

Awesome that's good to know, are you using the GSP-15? Are there any downsides to them?

Some people, myself included, find earplugs become painful if worn too long. Seems many in my family have smaller than normal ear canals.
I switch between electronic plugs for shooting prone - Walker Razor XVs -which work well for hearing protection/ audio headphones, and various electronic muffs for pit duty. I will experience extreme discomfort if i go all day with earplugs.

The price of some electronic plugs , given the possibility I could not wear them for extended periods has kept me away.

The noise rating is very low and I had read where they were only suitable for indoor 22, nothing bigger. ..... jim

I have the GSP-15's and I like them but if I had to do it over again I would probably get something else. They work fine for me in most situations but if you have someone with a muzzle brake shooting at the next bench they don't cut it. I've found that they don't like cheap batteries and the filter needs to be changed regularly but that's not really a big deal.

Oh, and put a clip or something on the lanyard. They are easy to loose while walking out to the targets.

ESP hearing protection. Pricey but I've had my analogs for almost 10 years now.

I looked them up and it really does look like a fine product. At $2500. i think my partially shot 60yr old ears with have to continue to double up my ear pro and sweat when it's hot....

Rick

I guess I better log in!!

I have been using GSP-15's since they were originally released.

First, why I use the GSP-15. They are analog amplifiers with compression. That means the gain is highest for soft sounds and lowest for load sounds and the change-over sounds just like the function of the normal ear. That is because that is how your ear works. In addition, analog amplifiers produce WAY better fidelity than digital and analog does not degrade your situational awareness as digital amps do due to their built in delay that can be variable with signal loudness.
The GSP-15 when inserted PROPERLY yield about 38 dB attenuation. They are rated at a lower NRR as that must follow old OSHA rules which take into consideration poor insertion.
Pick the ear tip that feels the best and seals the best in your ear. The gray foam tips are actually the best attenuation but take a little more care when inserting and get waxed up
easily. Yes, ear wax is a problem and is dependent on how clear you keep your ears and how often you clean your GSP-15's. The "filter" is actually dual purpose as it is part of the tuning components used to create high fidelity response as well as protection for the Receiver (hearing aid speak for speaker!) otherwise, if they get wax plugged, you buy a new pair of GSP-15's! So, replacing the filter once in a while is cheap protection. Actually I have not had to replace mine yet as I am careful in cleaning the tube thru the ear tip, which comes off the device easily.

With the GSP-15 you get un-excelled attenuation (if properly inserted), super fidelity
and still hear clearly during no-shoot times or no one shooting near you. Plus the best situational awareness!

And, yes, I am prejudiced!

I have the full bore digital. They are programmed to my hearing loss correction. They are great for deer hunting, skeet shooting, in the pits, and turkey hunting. For me they are not quite up to the task on a full firing line. For the firing line I use a set of molded ear plugs from my audiologist.

The ESP ones are definitely out of my price range. Cheapest one I saw on their site was $900. I think I will give the GSP-15 a try though based on the comments here

Does anyone have a place they recommend to buy them or even better a Canadian retailer?

Ive had ear incs for about 4 yrs love them. non digital shot show special $1000. worth every penny. use them on the line with 20 shooters

I have been using the Peltor TEP-100 ear buds this season and really like them. Work very well and they are rechargable. No more hearing aid batteries that go dead once you take out of the package. Get the skull screw foam ear piece.
