Electronic Dog Training Collar

well, I've already got her trained to push the wheelbarrow around and pick up her poop, but now it's time to get her out in the open country and find birds.

I'd like an electronic collar with both vibration and shock. I prefer small sized control device, good quality and simplicity. Not interested in multiple collar capability. Water proof, and rechargeable.

I've been out of the loop with these for awhile, and there are waaayyy too many to choose from. I'm hoping to get advice from folks who actually own and use them. jd

I use this gone one from Sport Dog and it works great for me. It doesn’t have a tone like the last one I had, but I never used it anyway. My dog gets a verbal command and a correction if she doesn’t comply. I did try a cheaper model from the same manufacturer to begin with and it just didn’t perform.

I have the Dogtra 280NCP with vibrate, nick and constant modes. It looks to be replaced by the 280C at Cabelas.

I have 3 different Ecollars. I use a Sportdog 825 ($250) and 425 ($185) daily for my GWP and Schnoodle (18lbs) while they are running around the yard. Both dogs are controlled on the same remote and are trained to the tone so the e-stim is almost never needed. Both have tone, vib, and e-stim. I highly recommend the Sportdog brand because they come with an instructional DVD/youtube and are thorough with the training instructions. I have had battery issues with one of the Sportdog collars but their customer service was very good and quickly sent me a replacement.

The third collar I have for hunting is the Dogtra Pathfinder GPS ($425) unit. It works exceptionally well but isnt ideal for training since you have to use your phone as the remote and isnt always the quickest to reach for. It also drains phone battery somewhat quickly but I have a phone case with a built in battery that lets me go for more than a full day of use. The GPS is nice because it gives me the peace of mind to let the Wirehaired run bigger.

Pretty much any Dogtra, Garmin, or Sportdog ecollar should work for you and your pup. My only suggestion is to stay away from the chinesium amazon branded options.

I have and use the Garmin Delta XC. After the initial training I have never had to use more than the vibration level. 95% of the time put the collar on and that's it. If any correction is needed a bump of vibration does it. Very satisfied with this product.

I use the Dogtra Arc handsfree. Not overly big (dog is 40 lb. Malinois), controller is on the smaller side, and the hands free is a nice option. If you order direct from Dogtra, you can use WDR10 for 10% of any single item over 200.00.
I'm not affiliated with either Dogtra or the two knuckleheads from Working Dog Radio.

I have the Garmin Sport Pro and am 100% satisfied with it. Used it yesterday all day long in a swamp hunting ducks. This is my second season with this setup and I have not had any problems. I do run two dogs off of it but of course it works fine for just one. Has shock, vibrate, different levels of stimulation and a LED light which might help find a lost dog.

From my experience, I would not buy a sport dog collar. I bought the 1825 for my non retrieving Lab just to get him to listen. After the warrantee was up the collar and transmitter lost its pair, sport dog wanted $160 to repair it. The collar clinic will not repair sport dog collars but they will take it and give me 10% off the purchase of a new collar.

Thanks for the info guys. I immediately notice that no one recommends the $29.95 specials listed on E bay.

Still have some deciding to do. jd

The older Tritronics were junk, ... crapped out pretty early. Went to Dogtra and they lasted over 10 years, with one needing a new rechargeable battery which was easily replaced. (ran three dogs back then).

Now have a Garmin-Tritronics because of the GPS feature. Way more features than I need, but seems quite robust. Into it for about $700. Spendy, but now I can find the Brittany in the Chukar hills of Idaho.

BTW, we are on Brittany #9

I have a TT 550 (garmin edition) that I have had zero issues with for about 4 (maybe 3) years. 4 other people I know have the same and same result. Light on the collar is a nice feature as well when walking into duck holes in the dark.

Garmin Alpha will track, tone and shock and it adjusts way down too. You never want to use any more shock than it takes to get the dogs attention for a given situation. In example, a pup doing something you just don't like...smelling a dead animal or playing too much, tone first and then go to a light shock to get his attention. Dog running a deer to catch it will probably need a little more the first time. Been training coon dogs for 47 years and a good e-collar is a must. Be careful, in the wrong hands or the wrong attitude you will ruin faster than you train!!! Lion Country Supply in Pa. is a fantastic bunch of folks to deal with.

Edit: Suggest you apply and only use the tone feature as above, to "fire a shot across his bow" so to speak. You want to tone instead of shock him when you are training. Far too many lazy trainers { I have trouble even calling them a trainer} use it to call their dog. That is a terrible waste of a great training aid. Teach the dog "here" and use the tone for correcting everything. If you don't, all you will have is the shock feature and that should always be a last resort. Best of luck sir!!!

I've had two Sport Dog collars\remotes since late 2013. Both still work great. I can run separate remotes or both with one remote. Water proof, good range in the mid level grade if I remember correctly.

Dogs are funny. The rough and tumble pit mix responds immediately to the vibe, and the aloof dainty lab-mix needs like a mid-level stim to pay any attention to it.

I might be inclined to buy a GPS model if I were hunting and the dog liked to run pretty far.

Great post msinc, I've made some of the mistakes you mention in past dogs. There are a couple of basic glitches that I want to keep a handle on with my dog, and there is still a lot I don't know about how she will act in open country, off lead. I've had dogs that never ranged further than a hundred yards, and I've had dogs that you couldn't keep within 200 yards. jd

Thank you sir!!! When it comes to bird dogs I found that they would run big and act crazy until I started doing some basic ground work like making them heel and work on a whoa post. My best pointer was given to me because the guy just could not handle the dog. I was not heavy handed and it took quite a bit of work, but he calmed down nicely and was a great worker. Coon dogs are what they are when it comes to going out and hunting. I have never seen anyone alter the way a coon hound hunted. Some have to be walked over a track, others bust the back out of the woods and get deep quick.
