ejector stuck

So, I was working with a new powder today looking for pressure signs. Sure enough I found them. The case filled the chamber to the point that the ejector hole sheared a small piece of brass on extraction and wedged it between the ejector pin and the hole. It's now soaking in a combo of kroil & Sweets. I'm reluctant to remove the roll pin as the ejector is jammed and now about .002" to .003" above bolt face. ( Rem. 700 w/ .308 bolt face) Is there someone out there that might have a remedy before I cause more damage and embarrassment ???? Thanks, Dale

For God's sake get the Sweet's out of there! No use in etching your bolt face on top of everything else. Drive out the roll pin and clean out the gunk. When in doubt, do it within a plastic bag so the parts all stay close.

O.K. Watercam. Will soak in Kroil over night. Have seen no sign of etching from the Sweets after 4 hrs. I'll rap the bolt nose on a piece of 2X4 in the morning to see if that will free it up then on to roll pin removal if it doesn't.......... As I said the ejector is jammed and not enough protruding to get ahold of. Any helpful suggestions appreciated.

Well, I pushed out the roll pin this morning using the old zip loc bag trick. No dice. The ejector is still stuck fast in the hole and rapping the bolt nose sharply on pine block won't dis-lodge it........ The good news is I didn't lose the roll pin. I'm reluctant to apply heat for fear of changing the temper of this important part. I'm really at a loss here. Would it be advisable to re-install the roll pin then drill out the ejector using a drill slightly smaller in diameter than the ejector rod. Then put a small ezee out in the hole, remove pin and attempt to twist the plunger out???? Any input from some one experienced would be greatly appreciated. ........ If you think you are capable of doing this work I'd like to hear from you. Thanks, Dale

If were me I wouldn't be drilling anything. Next I'd try brake cleaner, this will remove any gunk and may allow you to remove the ejector by knocking it against your pine 2X4.

After a Kroil soak and less the roll pin, and using a punch smaller than the ejector OD, tap on the end of the thing and see if gently knocking it deeper will also break it loose, just don’t allow the punch to slip off to the side buggering edge of the bore. If that don’t get it, center punch and drill using one smaller than the ejector OD. The vibes and such from the drilling will likely break the thing loose and you’ll end up with an ejector spinning on the end of your drill.

I had the same thing happen as you. Have you had the firing pin hole bushed? If so, the bushing hole may have broken through the back of the ejector's blind hole. I was able to pull the firing pin assembly & tap the ejector out with a very small pin.

First, thanks for ALL the input :) ...... jr600yd, Have tried the brake cleaner several times. So far no luck...........Ole freak, Now that's a possibility. I've got some Delrin rods and small wooden dowel I'll try 1st. I'll let y'all know how this works out....... Eddie Harren, My bolt face & nose have been trued. No ill effects from 4hr. soak w/ Sweets. It also had no effect on the brass sliver ::)........... Toolbreaker, Haven't had the F/P hole bushed. I'm assuming you were able to use the "break through" hole to fish in the pin that dis-lodged your plunger. Did I understand you correctly?

TA - DAH ! Success! ......... Tapped the ejector that .003" or so back into the hole, blew everything with brake cleaner then soaked with Kroil for 30 minutes then rapped the bolt nose on 2X4 eight or ten times. Repeated this five times and ejector finally broke free ;D Thoroughly cleaned and polished ejector and hole. Cold blued the ejector and re-assembled. Working as good as new. Thanks to all for the friendly advise................ Gotta' love the guys on this forum. ( figuratively speaking) ;)

Good deal. Glad you got it out. Yes, I just used a (I think) 3/64" ejector pin from a mold to fish through the back of the bolt & tap out the lodged ejector. From the looks of it, when my bolt was bushed, the crest of the tap broke through the ejector hole, leaving just enough of a window to do this.
