Educate me on springs

I recently broke a spring on a trigger. I called the manufacturer and they said they would send me one right away. I give them top marks on their customer support. However, if I had to go to a spring manufacturer and order a spring from scratch I would have no idea how to do it. I wouldn't know what to tell them other that the length, wire diameter and the diameter of the coils. Where can I go to learn more about springs? TIA. Javier

Also, contrary to popular belief, springs used in their normal range (stress kept below yield) do not significantly relax. I don't change out springs for age.

Spring rate K=L÷T (Load ÷Travel) expressed in typically pounds over 1" of travel, i.e. less than 1" travel will have a rate higher than what is necessary to compress the spring.

If you cannot measure rate easily for a replacement, number of coils can be useful as this will determine maximum travel of the spring.

The reference carlsbad offered gives all the required items. If you go through all the chapters, you will see it really is a complex problem to get the correct force and deflection and stress in the space allowed for the spring.

As a young engineer, eons ago, I did a lot of spring designs, and it was a pain in the rear. I recommend you don't even try. Do what you did, contact the manufacturer, or Wolff, or check out Brownells, who carries lots of gun springs for a replacement.
