Ed's Red???

Hello All

I am new to the forum and would like to say hello.

There are a few threads on bore cleaners that I have looked through and have not found much info on Ed's Red. I was wondering if you all use it much.

I mixed up a batch and it seems to work ok but it seems very thin because of the ATF. I was wondering if it would work just as good using another substance for the oil mix? Would something like Mobil 1 synthetic work and result in a more viscous mix?

Your right... there are good ones to buy. I just like to be a do-it-yourselfer. I have been using MPro7 for powder residue and CR-10 for copper. I mixed-up a batch of Red just to see how it works. I tried it today and it works pretty good but it is thinner than I like so the question.

Ed's Red is definitely not the best copper cleaner. It'll work for carbon OK, but there are far better options out there as Francis eluded to.

The only thing I use Ed's Red for is a quick & mild cleaning of my smallbore rifles. It doesn't have any ingredient,s) to work on copper fouling, and since I'm not a chemist, am not too keen on mixing it with some other solvent that does work on copper. You never know what sort of reaction you might get by experimenting with such a concoction.

For my copper cleanup I use CR-10.

I like the Ed's Red for the powder fowling. It seems to work pretty good. I would just like it to be a little thicker... this is why I was wondering if it would change the properties much going from the ATF to something like a Mobil 1 oil that has a heavier weight? I don't want to mix it with CR-10 because I like to keep my copper cleaning separate from my carbon/powder fowling cleaning.

I just computed a price per ounce and my Ed's Red mix cost me about 15 cents per ounce.
