edit for new barrel. How fast are you pushing 185's in 308 ?

Curious how fast all of you ate pushing the 185 gr. Juggernaut o. your 308?
Looking for your set-up as well. Mine is a 30" 10 twist using Palma brass and at 45.2 gr so far I'm not sure it's fast enough (2695fps). Still working up on powder, Varget.

Fixed typo

Re: How fast are you pushing 185's in 308 ?

Hopefully that's a typo and you meant 45.2, if not that's going to be a big boom lol. I got up to 44.9 with Varget in standard lapua brass. I was at 2670 fps.

Re: How fast are you pushing 185's in 308 ?

2830's with Varget, Lapua brass and a 30" barrel.
My barrel is throated for 215' above the neck junction so the 185' are up in the necks quite a bit. Little extra room for Powder.

Re: How fast are you pushing 185's in 308 ?

Am I getting lower FPS by using Lapua Palma brass ? This was shot this past weekend with temps in the mid 40's. I also noted that when going up in powder charge the point of impact was going lower on target ! I've never noticed that prior either. My throat on this barrel is .170" and seated .010" off the lands.

Re: How fast are you pushing 185's in 308 ?

I am getting about 2,650 fps out of my 24” AIAT 12 twist under 44.3 grain Varget in Lapua brass. Shooting around 0.5 MOA 5 round groups. Your MV seem a bit low for the higher charge and longer barrel.

Re: How fast are you pushing 185's in 308 ?

2775 with a 28" barrel and Varget. I'd rather not publish the actual load of Varget because every gun is different and what works in one action can be dangerous in another. I'm using a Barnard 'P' action which is a very stout action.

Re: How fast are you pushing 185's in 308 ?

Couple of data points for you:

In a stock Savage 12-FTR: 43.6 gr varget, 2.220 CBTO (jumping 0.15), Lapua LP brass, 30 in, 1:12 - 2770fps (this is a hot load based upon primers blowing at 95oF so don't try this one without a workup - although may have been a carbon ring)

In a Rem700 action: Small primer Lapua Brass, 44.0 gr varget, 2.287 CBTO (jumping 0.015), Krieger 28 in , 1:11 - 2685fps

Rounds loaded for Sav 12 used in Rem700 (i.e. jumping 0.082) and 43.6 gr varget in larger primer brass - 2695fps

Wait until you have 300'rounds on the bbl before serious velocity testing/observing

I gained 30 fps from 50 to 250

Re: How fast are you pushing 185's in 308 ?

I am getting 2705 with abm ammo on a 31" 1:10.25 twist bbl at sea level and getting 2730 with my own 200 gr hybrid behind 44.8 gr varget, 2.345 bto or .010 off

This is a used gun with over 300 rounds thru the tube already.

Re: How fast are you pushing 185's in 308 ?

FWIW, when I enter your numbers (30” barrel and Varget at 45.2 grain) into QuickLoad that has been adjusted for my rifle (keeping in mind this is for regular Lapua .308 case), I get an MV of around 2,827 fps and also VERY close to MAX PRESSURE.

Re: How fast are you pushing 185's in 308 ?

I haven't seen any pressure signs at all yet. Primers aren't flattened, no cratering, no hard bolt lift. I'm using a CED II chronograph that I shot side by side with a Oehler 35 and my CED was only 5 fps difference on the faster side. A buddy of mine and I wanted to see how much difference we had between the 2, we shot a couple different rifles thru them both with the same results. I don't believe my chronograph is the issue.

Re: How fast are you pushing 185's in 308 ?

That might be so but I am sure that most on this board will tell you that the charge you used i.e. 45.2 grain of Varget is high and close to the edge. That you can take to the bank.

I have an Ohler 35P and even though that thing is very good, any chrony under the wrong condition will give you a bad read. Unless you did the test you mentioned with this load, I would not bet my face on it.

Just think about this for a second - you are using a load that is higher than pretty much everything that has been posted thus far AND your MVs are lower than those quoted. Does this tell you that something is wrong somewhere? What I am trying to say is the most likely problem is the chrony.

With 41.3 grains of Varget and LC brass, I was getting 2650fps out of a factory Savage F T/R and a 30" tube. I could have gone hotter, but the accuracy was phenomenal.

Ditto. My 30" barrel is 1:11 and chambered for 185 Juggs or 200 Hybrids and with large primers and with 44.7gr of Varget I get 2807 fps and an SD of 8.4 at 51 degrees F.

At 44.4 SD drops to 6.2 at 2783. This is all on a fairly new V3. I have to keep a close eye on the primer pockets.

Interestingly I see a better node with H4895 at 43.5 to 44.0gr moving at 2806 and 2829 respectively with even lower SD's and far lower ES.

Re: How fast are you pushing 185's in 308 ?

Well... For giggles I put a new barrel on and started a load work up for it. I must have a really slow lot of Varget, it's also about 8 yrs old. Old barrel with 44.5 had 2667 Ave FPS, New barrel with same 44.5 had 2606 Ave FPS. With ZERO signs of pressure. I might open another jug of different lot to see. The new lots I have are all fairly new from this year.
The new barrel is a 10 twist .300" bore with .168" FB ,5R. Seating depth is .012" off lands, OAL is 2.955". I'm not totally convinced it's my chronograph...I also took out my 22-250 which has always read about 2800 FPS did again this morning.
Thanks again

Went out today with different powder lot. With all being the same... New lot is 60 fps faster with all powder charges. POI all about a 1/4" higher on target. Used three shot groups and they were slightly smaller than previous charges of same weights.
Still at 44.9 grains the fps was 2677.
