EASIEST pump gun to mount a scope on?

I have always wanted to bag a whitetail with a slug. My hunting distance will be about 80 yds max. I know rifled pumps will shoot more accurate, but I can make do with a smooth bore. Any suggestions?

Thanks everyone!

At 80yds a good rifled slug from a smooth bore with a bead on it will work fine. You can get any of the new turkey guns like a mossberg 835 or rem 870 and most are tapped now for scopes

I picked up a beater 870 from a guy that had a scope
mounted on it. The mount itself was bolted to the side
of the action. Not very stable in my opinion. I pitched
it. I think Choate was making something similar a few
years back for a see thru set up.

Why not use a red dot. It would be great in low light and plenty accurate. Maybe the holographic type, small, light, fast, and illuminated.

"Easiest" would probably be a Mossberg 500 that comes already tapped for a mount. Below is my 870 with a mount sold by Brownell's. Remington used cantilever barrels and never offered the 870 with the receiver drilled for a mount because the top is very thin. You can do it, but you end up with about two threads holding each screw. Recoil will blow them out {ask me how I know....}. The mount pictured has the screws going in at an angle and out some to the sides where the receiver is much thicker. Takes a little gunsmithing, but is first rate for an 870. 870 mount.JPG
As to scopes and aiming devices...I have tried them all. The problem with a red dot or holographic sight is that they gather no light. The edge of dark is when you are most likely to see game. You really want a decent scope with good glass.

Hillbilly, an 1100 sure does make shooting slugs a lot easier to tolerate! To me, a pump shooting a copper slug is like shooting a 458 Winchester.

You end up with a mossberg let me know and I'll send you the mount.

If you want to keep your shotgun dual purpose (bird shot and slugs) without a dedicated optic (slope, red dot, etc.) then open sights are way to go. There are a couple of different groups that have been perfecting use of modern open-style sights, such as ghost rings and hi-viz, with heavy shotgun for competition. Just do a search on YouTube for shotgun mods for 3-Gun. You'll probably note that most people have shifted away from pump action to autoloaders. Benelli's recoil system and reliability was a game changer that forced everyone to also improve their autoloader. I run a pump because it makes me smile... and it is second nature to me.

3-Gun type competitors have done a lot of hands-on testing of what open sights work best to run shotgun with both bird shot and slugs. There are lots of ideas/options so have fun watching some videos.

Take a look at Jerry Michulek's Clan (Jerry, Wife, and also daughter), who are top competitors. Jerry helped develop a shotgun for competition that has all the bells and whistles at a reasonable price.

I have an 870 cantilevered slug gun---what's it worth?? scope and mounts too---redfield i think--
interested?? I have no use for it... marc

Yep, 870 with the cantilever mount. They work very well. I still have mine but went to the Savage 220 bolt action for shotgun only areas.

I put a B Square mount on my sons youth model 870 and it worked great. You replace the trigger pins with the bolts and it works great. He killed deer with it. Put a Leupold 4X on it and he did really well with it. Take it off and you are back to regular shotgun.

I just epoxied a red dot to a M12 I didn't want to drill. It has worked great for several hundred rounds so far.

Interesting and glad it's holding!!!...I had a brother-in-law that took a factory engraved Model 12 and tig welded bases to mount a Unertl scope for turkey shoots in Pa. Six months later he did the same thing to an 1897 Winchester with a solid rib. Probably could have restored either one until he drilled about 200 holes in each barrel to port them. He did win a lot of turkey shoots, but not that many.....he actually wasn't dumb, he just didn't give a GD.
When I asked, "what in the kingdom of cat schitt do you need a target scope on a shotgun for???" He said he set the zero so only he knew where to hold in case someone else used his gun. Apparently at the shoots anyone could request to use any gun. "Nothin' else patterns like these ol' Winchesters"...........

I have a modern day win M-1300 turkey gun,,,it is drilled and taped for mounts (Leu-3x9) and I use a rifled tube and shoot sabot reloads with Lyman cast slugs (look like a large Pellet !!!) and it is a VERY accurate combo,,,Roger

When I was at the NRA show in Pittsburgh, B-Square was showing a mount for the Taurus/Rossi pump that fastened to the side of the receiver using existing screws. It wasn't terribly attractive, but looked solid and well designed. I haven't seen them for sale anywhere yet though.

I think the Benelli Supernova's also come drilled and tapped for a rail.

I went with a Speedbead and a Burris FastFire III (3MOA) dot on my slug slinger as mine wasn't and we also shoot some turning targets with slugs over here

I do like the speed and how intuitive the red dot is. But as others have said, a scope is better in low light. (I went for a low power scope on my .44 mag lever action as found it better for that - interesting comparison between straight walls and slug guns)

In terms of ammo: get Brenneke type slugs not Foster would be my advice
