ear spacing for rear bag- what's the rule of thumb?

I've been using the same old soft leather bunny bag since I started shooting F/Tr back in '08. I recently switched to a two stitch minigator, which I like everything about, except the height. I'm a real ground hugger, so am going to order an extra short minigator direct from Edgewood. Before I do that, how is the stock supposed to ride the bag/fit the ears? I think it should ride on the base of the ears, and not the top of the bag itself, but input would be appreciated!

I use flat bottom stocks and like to ride on the stitching. I spec my bags 1/8" narrower that the flat on the stock.

Long time Benchrest Hall of Fame Inductee Tony Boyer, who has enough points to be inducted into the Hall 16.4 times, says in his book on page 219 "My rear bag is leather with Cordura ears, and three stitches to give it a little flat area for the stock to ride on."

Bart Sauter, a recent inductee, told me a few weeks ago that he and a lot of others, put enough sand in the ears so that the stock rides above the stitches.

It looks like it's your choice.

thanks gents- like most things, it sounds like it's a matter of try and see what works.

This is the way I ordered my Dr. bag for my flat bottom. Later! Frank
