Ear plugs

I had a set of molded ear plugs made at Camp Perry 15 years ago. They are starting to show their age. Does anyone know of a site where I can get a kit to make a new set? Thank you

If you are going to go that route, visit your Audiologist and have him/her remove the wax from your ears.

If you are going to pay good money for solid earplugs, you would be well advised to go to an Audiologist and they will make a proper ear impression, send it to a mold lab and you will get back an ear plug set designed to be worn in the ear and it will go beyond the "second bend" in the ear canal to stop the boomie occlusion effect. It WILL cost more than the "auto show" plugs, but it will fit better, sound better and it will be made from medical grade material.

Or, yellow foamies give as good attenuation for less money.

I have a set of molded plugs in the truck. Had em made at work. Rarely use em.. I buy boxes of a plug called Skull Screws at the local safety supply. These are easy to install and remove..

For what it's worth, this past February when I attended the Berger Southwest Nationals at Ben Avery, I saw a booth where they were selling custom ear plugs and making molds for buyers. So consider checking out some in state competitions where you might find a booth that makes what you are looking for. Just a thought.

Had mine custom made at a registered State Skeet Shoot. Did have my ears checked and cleaned by a ear / nose and throat MD prior to going and getting these fitted. Love em.

The problem is I have really narrow canals. I can't get foam plugs into my ears. I get ear infections (swimmers ear) when I wear muffs. Hell even this humid weather causes problems.
I never thought about an audiologist, I'll have to locate one. Thanks again, Alan

Here's a tip. I had a pair custom molded by a lady on Commercial Row at Perry about 30 years ago. Problem that popped up was that when I would my cheek weld, they would loosen. Especially late in the day when out in the heat all day. If you can, bring a gunstock with you and get them molded while your cheek is on the stock. Then when using them, take out and remove any wax and sweat build up.

Arshuter, if your plugs are the silicone version, more than likely another coat or two of sealer will bring em back to new. I'm trained thru work to make them for our employees and contractors in the boiler house I work in. Unless they tear, or you have change in canal.

That's the problem with molded plugs. When you yawn, grin, cough, etc; your ears move, and the molded plug starts to lose its place in your ears, and breaks its seal. Foam plugs expand, and maintain that seal.

They started to pull apart. The little piece that goes in my ear canal. I'm afraid it will pull off in my ear.

So far I've never had that problem. I think I got mine from the same lady.

Interesting!
All you guys with "Auto Show" plugs.

The "Auto Show" plugs are made with a two part mix similar to that used by Audiologists when fitting hearing aids. The difference is, The ear impression the audiologist makes is made for one reason, to use to make a mold for a permanent earmold for long term use. The two part mix is not as stable long term. The final material used for either hearing aids or solid plugs made the correct way is they are made with material dedicated to use as ear molds and are medically inert.

In addition, the person at the event that makes your plugs on the spot is quite often a hearing aid dispenser, but often is some one off the street who bought a kit to make instant ear plugs and learned how to do it from a brochure that came with the kit.

Not only will an Audiologist make a quality impression, they will do an Otoscopic examination of the ear canal to aid in finding any physical problems and see the ear canal shape and determine if ear plugs are appropriate. The Otoscopic examination and the ability to make quality ear impressions that extend all the way to the second bend in the ear canal can not be learned from a brochure! Only if your ear plug extends to and sometimes past the second bend will occlusion effect be minimized and in fact problems with cheek weld will also be minimized. The outer half of the ear canal is the cartilaginous region and the inner half is the bony region. Only if the plug extends into the bony region will it be in a stable position.
Yah, the correct plugs are more expensive. But, so too was your new Night-Force Competition. Isn't your hearing equally worth investing in?
