E. R. Shaw ?

Does anyone have personal experience with Shaw Custom rifle builds? Their prices seem too good to be true. They are an option that was mentioned to me recently. I’m preparing to start my first rifle and don’t want it to be a dissapointing experience. Thanks in advance.

If you go with Shaw barrel, be prepared to be disappointed. When It comes to custom barrel blanks, you pay for what you get! I won't install one if a customer brings it. They are not hand lapped. A good custom barrel blank is hand lapped. The barrel blank you choose is NOT the place to skimp or look for a discount, just to save a few dollars.

From all I have seen, I would pass. My buddy was quoted 18months. It's a Savage action. Barreled with a nut, I believe. And put in a decent looking stock. I can do that myself.

There is a multitude of amazingly talented 'smiths on this board. Pick one and have at it.

I have used Andy Delikat of http://adarms.net/ . He was personable and easy to deal with. The rifle shoots a lot better than I can. Turn around was pretty reasonable as well.

ETA: I just looked and it looks like they hard shoulder the barrel to the action. I'd still pass.

I had a chat with a well known smith on this site. He suggested the 6SLR to fit my particular needs. Apparently, Shaw dosen’t Produce that barrel anyway. I planned on starting the build with a Borden action and a Krieger barrel. The more research that I do, the more I believe I’d not be as happy with the cheaper rig. Thanks for the input, folks.

I can tell you that Shaw barrels are not lapped BUT they heat treat them before they are button rifled. This gives them a much better interior finish. Are they as smooth as a lapped barrel? No, but they don't copper badly. I have a Shaw barrel on a Mauser Mini action in 223 Ackley. You would be had pressed to find a barrel that would keep up on that platform. If it's a hunting rifle, there shouldn't be an issue. My 223 A will shoot 3/4" groups at 300 yds. I call that close enough in a hunting rifle.

Larry, I've got news for you,,,,,,, all steels for centerfire barrels are heat treated before they are rifled!. The better button rifle barrel makers 'stress relieve' after rifling and contouring.

I've got friends with 2-3 each . Excellent local shooters , no barrel nuts and the bores look better than MOST ERShaw barrels I have used . The fit and finish exceeded my original comments to my friends . I can't build one for myself that looks as good , shoots as good and is that inexpensive.

A few years ago when I first started playing with a savage I got a pre fit 1-9 twist 280AI then fluted it and put some rounds together for fire forming I had some140 grain ballstic tips and some 168 grain Barnes lrx's.
The first group of Barnes bullets were all keyholing but it was one hole they went through.
I new they weren't stabilizing but they were making nice groups even though the hole was like 3/4 diameter.o_O

I have one of their AR builds. Maybe I got really lucky but it shoots really good with hand loads after swaping in a geissele trigger.

I bought a rifle with a shaw barrel on it. It fouled terribly after 7-8 rounds. My smith borecsoped it at the time and said it was good for a tomato stake.
Never again.

I only have 2 problems with the Shaw Customs, 1. Pay for it up front-100%. 2. wait for it 12-18 months. That was enough for me the minute they said it, NO Shaw customs.
