duracoat an encore

For the life of me, I can't figure out why I bought a stainless encore some years back. Anyhoo, I was thinking about getting a shake and spray duracoat kit to dull it up some. Are the 35 dollar kits worth it? Easy? Long lasting and durable? Or should I get it dipped or beadblasted? Suggestions.

Here's my take. Duracote I've sprayed w/ air brush for most uniform coverage. It looked good & went on very uniformally both texture and color. I didn't have a way to bake the finish. Consequently the durability became an issue w/ hunting use. I recently refurbed a rifle w/ Ceracote baked. Same good looks but much more abrasion resistant. If I had stnls I'd consider blasting w/ 120 grit alum. oxide. If you're not happy w/ results the surface is now prepped for either of the two coatings. The 120 grit blast won't degrade lettering or scroll work if applied at 60 psi or lower. I've never tried the kit you mention. I'd be a little leary of its durability particularly if you don't bead blast first. Hope this helps, Dale

Not sure I understand the question.............. Appearance wise, you'll have a totally non-reflective surface and a much duller/ muted coloration. Sorry, I don't have a pic to share. A local shop that does automotive Hot Coat will usually have a blasting cabinet. Be prepared to plug the bore & chamber yourself. If you're going to do the action you'll need to dis-assemble as the blasting grit will really gum up the works otherwise. Dis-assembly is a bit tedious but will sure fill those long winter nights. ;) Did I answer your question?

Yes. That answered my question. I was wondering how the finish would look after blasting with aluminum oxide. Neighbor has a cabinet and encores are pretty simple so looks like a weekend project has reared it's head.

skyav8r,

This should give you some idea. This barrel was blasted with 120 grit alum oxide. :)

Paul
