DuPont releases new powder…..

I got a can of this fantastic new DuPont pistol powder today. I haven’t seen it on a shelf anywhere, so I assume it’s brand new. I also discovered that the powder companies are working hard to keep the prices down. They only put 8 ounces in the can, and it was priced at a very attractive $1.45. I’ll do a ladder test with my Springfield 9mm and get back to you.

I believe that was a popular powder, or a powder with a very similar #, for the .45ACP in the mid to late 1960s for those competing in the CF & .45 matches in 2700 agg matches

duPont data, as reprinted in 1964 Handloader's Digest:

.45 ACP, 230 gr FMJ + 5.7 gr 5066 = 830 fps MAXIMUM
.300" seating depth (case length + bullet length - seating depth = OAL)


NRA Handloader's Guide, 1969 edition
data from H.P. White Laboratory

9mm P, 116 gr Norma FMJ + 4.5 gr 5066 = 1102 fps @ 30,838 psi
(Really CUP by current testing and terminology.)

From P.O. Ackleys Handbook which had some rather hot loads

45 ACP, 170 grain bullet:
7 grains @ 860 fps
10.5 grains @ 1160 fps
45 ACP, 235 grain bullet:
7 grains @ 760 fps
9 grains @ 940 fps
.357 Magnum, 148 grain bullet:
4 grains @ 1000 fps
.357 magnum, 161 grain bullet:
5.3 grains (sic) @ 1090 fps

Lists loads for.....9mm, 38spl, 44spl, 44mag, 45acp, and 45 auto rim.
Loading's usually show it just after Bullseye, so it's on the fast side.

BTW. That $1.45 price would be the equivalent of about $30 per pound today.
