Dropped Barrel

Working on the 264WM barrel channel some more I bumped the action walking around the bench. The barrel hit the concrete on the edge of the muzzle. What's the chance it still shoots? Last time out it held a .184 moa average ( 3 shot) at 300 yards. What a sick feeling when I heard it land.

Its a piece of steel, i wouldnt worry unless you damaged the inside of the crown even then. Shoot it and see what happens

Only one way to find out...put some BB's through it. If there is a problem have a good smith turn .060" off the muzzle and recrown it.

I dropped one of my polished bolts on the cement floor many years back. I got some dense rubber mats to put along the work bench. I haven't dropped a bolt or barrel since.

It didn't shoot any better BTW:rolleyes:

I thought that only I could do dumb chit like that. I'd get some carpet remnants and put them under the work area or maybe anti-fatigue matting. Having dropped a coin inadvertently one learns real quick to protect one's landing area.

Great ideas. I have lost count of the number of 6ppc cases I have dropped. Yet I always think I want drop another one. Probably want take but one barrel to convince me.

My Smith says there are no guarantees when you cut off and recrown but he has generally seen improvement in accuracy.

Dropped one of mine off of the shooting bench while cleaning during the break in process. Ugly scratches in several places on the barrel and a scratch on the sunshade of the Sightron scope. It has shot very well. I guess the scratches helped "tune" the barrel.

Thanks for the reply's. Guess I'll find out soon. I do have one side of the floor by the bench rubber matted and of course it missed the mat. It really only could of traveled about 10 inches if the muzzle hit first. I think.

My gun working area has an industrial carpet. Yes I do get powder in the carpet and yes I do vacuum it. Never had a problem dropping anything. It just lays where it falls and no damage.

This is my woodworking bench and in 35 years a chisel has never hit the floor, just a barreled action. Might do some carpet.
