Drones for spotting

An interesting article I saw in today's Wall Street Journal (see attached PDF file)

I guess I've just aged and become old school traditionalist when it come to hunting and fishing. High powered scopes and guns with heads up displays that automatically give you a firing solution at any range along with drones for locating prey. . . . Where's the hunting skill in all of that? Is it just about how fast one can locate a prey and kill it? Sounds like more effort for instant gratification???

@Dave Berg

You’re giving me every reason to get one an no reason not to. Thanks for all the great information. Looks like it’d be a great fit plus I might find a ton of other fun uses.

I'm sure 60,000 or so years ago the WSJ, if it had existed, would have bemoaned the evolution of the bow and arrow replacing the spear and taking the sport out of hunting the way real men do it. But technology advances and people take advantage of that. I assume most states will outlaw using drones for locating and possibly even herding deer. Yes, you can chase them very easily. Some people will break the law and do it anyway.

When I was still in PA and actively flying drones I was asked a number of times by a number of people to "Just take a fly over Wolf mountain and see if there are any deer over there. It'll take us a whole day with the snow and all and we don't even know if there's anything there". I was sympathetic but never did it.

I did track down a couple deer that had been shot and ran off. Sometimes, especially with poor shot placement, they can go a very long way before they expire. With snow on the ground a dead deer piled up is very easy to spot from a couple hundred feet up. One of them, a doe I spotted for a guy, was never even retrieved. I gave him the GPS location but he said that was too far to walk just for a damn doe. He shouldn't have been hunting.

For what it's worth the FBI together with the FAA is looking at seriously restricting and regulating drones and drone deployment. A drone has become the weapon of choice for terrorists.

I can never bring myself to buy just one. I always assume every flight is going to end in disaster so I always have at least one spare. Fortunately it has never happened aside from the son-in-law sticking one in a maple tree.

The newer, smaller ones you can even fly indoors which taught me a couple things. A spinning prop will destroy one of my wife's antique Christmas tree decorations and my daughter's dog can jump a lot higher than I thought.

ROFLMAO

When RC helicopters first came out I got one for indoor flying. Once the cat got used to the noise he destroyed it :)

They are controlled now if over a certain weight. You have to register with the FAA and the flight area can be severely limited based on where you are at. They have a nice app for letting you know if you are in a restricted zone. Our city bans them from city parks and they are banned at all state parks.

The fines and penalties can skyrocket depending on where flown. The most common out here has been forest fires. The idiots fly them to see the flames and interrupt the tanker drops. One guy got 2 years in jail and tens of thousands in fines. The fines around here start at $500 and confiscation of the drone. One guy here complained of a neighbor intercepting his drone. Police found out he had flown over the park so fined him instead.

This is where you find out that you don't own the airspace over your home....but, the government controls it.

This is interesting. Gov entities (that are not the FAA) can only restrict where you can takeoff/land. Only the FAA controls airspace. In this case, they can restrict your from takeoff/landing within the park, but cannot legally stop you from flying over it. This is a common topic for flying over national parks.

If the guy wanted to go after the neighbor, he should have went to the feds. Just like airspace, drone flights fall under the purview of the FAA and the FAA treats drones just like normal aircraft. There is no legal justification for Joe-schmo to intercept a drone.

I don’t think it’ll be a problem where I shoot?

I’m not out in a subdivision next to an airport.

But, to be sure, I downloaded the app, sure enough, unrestricted.
