I need to make hotel reservations somewhere about halfway between Missouri and Raton, and wondered if anyone had any suggestions or experience driving the routes shown below.

(Google source)
Northern route - I-70, 40, ... 857 miles / 12h 39m
Southern route - I-70, 50, ... 826 miles / 12h 42m

Thanks!

I'll probably take one of the Southern routes from Kansas City. The southern most is how I drive to Phoenix so it's familiar.

That northern route, when you hit Colorado, has some funky roads I wouldn't want to be on. That is a dirt back road from Sugar City to Rocky Ford. Good test of your suspension and scope holding capabilities.

Those of you that say going the southern route there is nothing to see, because you don't know what your looking at. I can't see the forest because of the trees comes to mind.

If your in a hurry, we'll take the fastest route of course.

Layed back, a quick Google will give plenty to look at. There is some beautiful country out there, get off the beaten path a little bit. A lot of fine people out that way as well.

Should be a simple straight-thru drive... no need for a hotel/motel until you get there - leave @ 0600 or so, get there in time for a late dinner and a good nights rest. Easy-peezy.

I took the northern route from St. Louis a few years back left 11:00 a.m. pulled in 3:00 a.m. non stop two drivers wasn't to bad ...you can make real good time across Kansas...

It’s a long drive for one driver, it took us 15-16 hrs from my house north of stLouis area about 40 miles. Learning how to walk again at a few rest stops with fuel and food on the run. We’re usually pretty disabled when we get there! Lol road backups are always a guaranteed on a long trip, be sure to avoid KC during traffic hours. At your age the 2 day plan is smart.

Regretfully, I will no be able to make it to the Nationals in Raton in September! (*)

I successfully cancelled my room reservations at Whittington, and the hotel at Dodge City. However, I have not been able to reach the Bald Eagles Rifle Club to cancel my registration. I sent them an email, but have not heard back yet, and cannot find a phone number to call them.

Does anyone know what their telephone number is, or how to get in touch with them?

Thanks!

Alex
(*) My wife has to accompany me on any long drive in case of another stroke or detached retina, and she cannot make it.
