Drill and tap Enfield scope mount?

Looking for a scope.moint for a 1944 No4 Mk1 Enfield.

It was sporterized at some point and is in no way historically accurate. I'm having the barrel rebored to .35-303 and would like to have it drill/tapped for a scope mount while it's at the smith.

Is a top mount realistic or would a side mount be better? Just forward mount and use a scout style?

Thoughts?

Thanks, Matt.

If your rifle still has the original issue peep sight, you can replace that with a piece which is milled to Weaver base dimensions. You may also install a piece to which you can attach a Weaver base. I did the latter. I used a Number 55 base on the front, then milled another 55 to the correct height and used that on the back. WH

Good info thanks. The original rear sight has been removed unfortunately. Was hoping for something that didn't involve more than the drill and tap.

do you mind taking a phone pic of the receiver and posting it?

The rifle is at the smiths right now so don't have it here to take pics but these are a couple from earlier.

an idea,,,, get the two piece redfield mounts or bases from the 50s and 60s. they are on ebay. see how they match etc w the receiver. and go from there. you may end up not using the mounts but it will give you certainly in your decision. PS, that sporter job was well done. good looking rifle.

The S&K insta mount will allow you to mount a scout scope over the rear sight. No drilling or tapping necessary.
