DREAM RIFLE

I already have an 1861 Harpers Ferry 3 band musket.
And after many years of wanting/searching, i finally found my Ruger 77 in 257 Roberts (at a price i could afford).

Now i only have 4 guns that i really want.
1) Dakota 97 classic in 7mm Dakota.
2) Ruger #1 leaning towards 25-06.
3) Ruger 77 the stainless with the Zytel paddle stock. Either 280 Rem, or 7mm Rem Mag.
4) Savage Model 24. .410 over .410.
Had one years ago, but was stolen from me. Loved that lil shotgun!

I'm very surprised to see so many individuals wanting their DREAM RIFLE to be a giant caliber double rifle. I did not see that coming.

These questions are always fun and interesting to see what others select.

I imagine for each person it depends in the intended purpose. First and foremost, the rifle must be of a caliber that is suited for the intended purpose. It must be accurate enough for that purpose and must be reliable.

For me it would be an all purpose hunting rifle suitable for deer, varmints and predators. For me, cosmetics mean very little - only performance interests me.

If I had to pick just one for my purposes it would be the Winchester Model 70 featherweight in 243 Win. with the control feed action. I had Model 70 in the late 60's, my first center fire rifle, but it was the cheaper push feed action. It was equipped with a simple but reliable 3 x 9 Redfield scope and it served me very well taking a few bucks, does, many ground hogs and a few foxes. It really started to shine once I started reloading and could tune the loads to the rifle.

Foolishly I parted with it, trading it for a Rem 700 in 30 06 because the gun magazines at the time told me that the 243 was marginal at best for deer. The strange thing is I never lost a deer to the 243 if I hit it! Young and dumb would best describe me. Years later I learned the folly of my misguided belief. Do get me wrong, there is nothing at all wrong with the great 30 06, it was just more rifle than I needed and wasn't the optimum choice for most of my hunting needs, i.e. varmint and predator hunting.

Superior Rifle #1, 222 1/2, in original Sherman stock, with no DT, only Unertle mounts and a Programmer on it.

I think many are thinking Presentation Rifle. I shoot F-Open. To me Cigarcop makes dream rifles.
For me, a dream rifle is something I'll never be able to justify buying. I can justify buying competition rifles (and have!) because they are functional things that I will use extensively. I would never use a Hagn frequently enough for me to feel like it was worth about 5 years of retirement (what that level of investment anytime in my near future would likely result in if put in my retirement portfolio) regardless of how beautiful I think the Hagn is, or how much I'd like to support that kind of artistry.

Even if I end up with $25,000 and I just have nothing better to spend it on, I probably still wouldn't bring myself to purchase a Hagn - because I'm not going to hang it on the wall to look at. If I want something to look at, I would find more practical artwork to buy - like a big chunk of the most exotic walnut to finish and hang on the wall instead. No one is stealing a great chunk of stump on the wall!:p

In a way, it’s like us Old Hot Rodder guys that have Vintage street cars with more horsepower than one can imagine . We don’t go to the track, we don’t race anymore, we just like the idea of creating and owning something beautiful and totally impracticable for everyday use. We occasionally drive it just to remind us that we are alive.

I would never go to Africa. Heck, I don’t even hunt. But just having and occasionally shooting a big double reminds us that there is a whole other world of firearms out there that is defined not in just the sum of it’s parts but in beauty, craftsmanship, legend and lore.

Or maybe it’s like my patented answer I give my wife when she asks.......”what do you want that for“?..........”Because”
