Dove Hunting Rules

Dove Hunting is not illegal, per se. However, doves are considered migratory game birds. As such, they are subject to Federal Regulations. See this page: http://www.fws.gov/le/HuntFish/WhatisLegal.htm

Some of the notable restrictions on Dove Hunting are:

50 CFR § 20.21 What hunting methods are illegal?
Migratory birds on which open seasons are prescribed in this part may be taken by any method except those prohibited in this section. No persons shall take migratory game birds:

,a) With a trap, snare, net, rifle, pistol, swivel gun, shotgun larger than 10 gauge, punt gun, battery gun, machinegun, fish hook, poison, drug, explosive, or stupefying substance;

,b) With a shotgun of any description capable of holding more than three shells, unless it is plugged with a one-piece filler, incapable of removal without disassembling the gun, so its total
capacity does not exceed three shells;
...
,d) From or by means, aid, or use of any motor vehicle, motor-driven land conveyance, or aircraft of any kind, except that paraplegics and persons missing one or both legs may take from any stationary motor vehicle or stationary motor-driven land conveyance;

-----------

The Federal migratory game bird hunting regulations can be found in 50 CFR Part 20 . If you have additional questions about dove hunting and the law, contact the nearest U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service law enforcement office or one of the Service regional law enforcement offices. You should also consult State fish and wildlife agencies to determine what State regulations apply.

----

Bottom line--NEVER shoot doves with a rifle, any rifle. And NEVER use a shotgun with greater than 3-shell capacity.

Folks,

This post was created for a simple reason -- to provide information so users would not,unknowingly) hunt birds in a manner that might violate Federal law.

This is not a question of being "politically correct." We are NOT anti-hunting on this website. There is no "agenda" to discourage game-taking.

However, one thing I will not allow on this board are any posts that, even inadvertantly, encourage conduct that may violate Federal, State, or local law.

I'm sure you can understand why.

I've deleted the subsequent posts in this thread because, #1 some posts trivialized the issue of compliance with game laws, and #2 the thread devolved into petty name-calling, which is another thing that won't be tolerated on this board.

If you want to hunt game birds, I'm all for it--just do so in a manner that complies with all legal regulations. If you don't like those regulations, that's fine... you can work through the regulatory and political process to have them changed.

Thank you, it makes it a tougher battle for gun and hunting rights when the folks that are supposed to be on our side are actually lobbying for the other team.
