dot vs scope

I have a 10-22 setup for speed steel shooting. I have a dot on it now. It works great, but at distance 50yds, The gun runs tights groups 1" with bulk ammo. I can't see the smaller targets, My old eyes just can't see what I am shooting at. I was thinking about a 1 X 6 scope for longer range. 1X for close stuff, 6X for long range. Anyone with input would be helpful.

Since a 1X is no magnification go either 2-7 or 3-9. They are common, affordable and any differences are essentially negligible. Just remember - you can't hit if you can't see it.

Vortex Diamondback 2-7x35mm, get the Rimfire version, parallax free fixed at 50 yards.

I posted this on another forum:

=============
I like the Nikon EFR (Extended Focussing Range) 3-9x, 40 which I put on my CZ 452 Silhouette. I use it for sniping ground squirrels in front of my house. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/275994/nikon-prostaff-target-efr-rimfire-rifle-scope-3-9x-40mm-1-2-moa-adjustments-adjustable-objective-precision-reticle-matte

It has an AO that lets you focus down to 10 yards, and ½ MOA adjustments, which to me is fine for a .22 scope.

The glass is pretty good: sharp at the center, very good color and contrast. There is a little spherical aberration at the periphery.

It has fine cross-hairs (which, if you hunt in low light, may work against it for your purposes) and it tracks pretty well.

I like the magnification range, particularly the lower end. The price is right.

My biggest complaint is that the parallax adjustment is not "side focus." But I can live with that.

Get a Burris speed bead. When you have the dot on the target shoot it don't matter where your head is. Way better for fast shooting then a scope. Larry
