Donut anticipation

This maybe an exercise in foolishness but is there a possible method to preempt the donut issue and neck turning in general.Could a custom die, say a Neil Jones, fully supporting the sized case be used during a neck reaming procedure that would yield a uniform case neck and properly sized shoulder? I am working with a 6.5 Swede at the upper ends of the pressure scale.

"Donut anticipation"

Is when you first pull into the parking lot of the grocery store and can smell the freshly baked apple fritters, long johns and of course, delectable hot fresh glazed donuts before your in the front door....

some cartridges are more prone to donuts. I get them all the time with 6BR, 6x47L, & 6.5-284. I have a 6.5x55 Swede on a Tikka and run it with 140 Amax over 49.0 H4831SC, not a light load. 6 reloads on my Lapua brass and no donuts yet.

I hope that my only donut problems are Krispy Kremes and Dunkins but that aside could the procedure of case preparation I am asking to be considered avoid them and neck turning all together?

The best ways to avoid doughnuts is to have a good match between the body portion of the chamber and the FL die, and to be careful when setting up the FL die so that the amount of bump is minimal. With a more gently sloping shoulder, I have found that setting the die so that the shoulder is in the same position as the fired brass works. Particularly if the fired brass chambers easily. A die that is a good match to the chamber, that is properly set up, will show much less case growth than one that is not. When cases grow, brass from the body is forced up into the neck, and since it is thicker, you get a doughnut.

I have run into the donuts before and just tossed the brass. That's easy. This time around I am pushing a 139-142gr @ 2975-3000fps out of a 1-8" R5 modern actioned Swede. I know I need uniform neck thickness to get uniform neck tension. I would like to avoid turning the necks. Is it possible to manage by using a custom die like a Jones, created for a specific chamber, to size and support the case and while supported ream it to a uniform thickness?

Although Jones does not list neck reaming dies, these folks do. I have one. http://www.huntingtons.com/specialtymerchandise.html

Let me try the question this way. In theory this method would seem to avoid having to turn necks and would accomplish uniform neck thickness and avoid donut formation. I understand the reaming would require precise centering. Please enlighten me if I am mistaken.

Get a K&M carbide 6.5 mandrel for the neck turner and end your problems and you will need a expander mandrel also and just just expand the neck till you feel the donut and stop. the carbide cutter will remove thedonut.....jim

Flame suit on! I have discussed with two gentlemen on BR central the possibility of having a die made to snugly hold the brass and then having a reamer made thar has a pilot on the end that closely fits the ID of your brass's neck and then a reamer that follows it to precisely ream the neck to your chosen diameter (or neck thickness) I believe that it is possible to do a credible job that way...however it would be expensive to get there from here!

Hello Mr. Allen, I have a Harrell's Die to match my 6PPC chamber and bump the shoulder .001". By your previous post I should be able to marginalize a "growing" donut problem. I have a problem though right from the start. After expanding the necks on my 220 Russian to 6mm, I notice a donut at the inside bottom of the case neck. I was checking into an L.E. Wilson case trimmer. With that trimmer I could use an L.E. Wilson neck reamer. Can I avoid changing my case trimmer by ordering the neck reamer die from the company that you listed? I went to the website, but could not find a picture of the unit. Thanks.

Timeout,
What does the bolt closure feel like when you fire form cases? If I do not turn into the shoulder, and have to force the bolt closed, a doughnut is formed. I would stay away from using a neck reaming die after turning. Also, unless your bullet shanks are seated into the area of the doughnut, I don't believe that the thickening makes any difference.

Sorry to drag this off topic slightly
Has any one tried removing donuts using a K&M mandrel like this guy?

I have a K&M cutter mandrel that fits the neck turner but can't see how it would ever work as part of the neck turner given you have to expand sized cases with an expander mandrel prior to neckturning

Boyd,
The bolt closure is smooth and easy. Also, the bullet is not seating down where the donut is. So it sounds like I am worried about nothing. Just reading all the donut horror stories and fearing the worst kind of put me on edge. I respect your knowledge/experience on these matters. I will leave things alone and if no problem ever develops, problem solved. Thanks!

If you use the K&M expander properly you only expand the neck to you feel the expander touch the donut then back off. Run the neck turner in and it will cut the material off. Then let the neck turner cut a little material off the shoulder area and you will end your donut problem. Ken went to all the trouble to help with this problem and nobody does it......jim
