Don't just toss your old Brass

I save my wore out stuff and assorted range pick-up (clean up actually) and toss it in an
ice cream pail near my bench.
When that pail git's near full I bring it in to the local salvage yard.

The stuff is up,, $2.00 a pound! That ice cream pail landed me $25

I don't know `bout you guy's, but that's a box of bullets or a pound of powder where I live. ;D

Just sayin,,

Several of my friends & I have been doing that. Just watch out for some of the crooked scrap dealers and their "scales". You will be short-changed if not careful. Been there, done that! :(

I guess because I'm on the buying end I should tell you that in today's world you need a Business License/Tax Number/EPA License to be in the game.

They are cracking down....Not hard enough, but they are trying to keep up with the stolen wire, copper/brass plumbing, catalytic converters , shopping carts, man hole covers....etc that are being turned in every day. Mostly to support a drug or alcohol addiction, but some are just trying to keep a roof over there heads and food in the mouth, same goes for the crooked scrap dealer.

necchi,

You made out real well at $2.00/lb. selling as Yellow Brass, nomally they would be bought as cartridge cases ($1.68/lb., 9/2 close) due to the fact they are not made the same as Honey 33% Zinc, 67% Copper and are dirty haveing primers in them.
Now keep up your new Green/Recyclying by doing the same with any aluminimum cans or foil also, it adds up too!

I can remember buying cartridge cases from the US Air Force Base for $50/Ton and having to sign waivers about the "End Use" of the brass, those days are long gone.

I took a bucket to the local scrap dealer a while back and was refused BECAUSE the primers (spent)were still in the cases. Knocked them out and all was good.

Roger: I had the same experience: they reminded me before I brought them to their site, that the primers had to be removed before they would accept them. They said leaving them in would contaminate the brass during meltdown. Company I have delt with is very concerned about where scrap metal comes from. You must show a photo I.D., whole transaction is on video & they take the license plate number of your vehicle. They also pay the going market prices and give you a true weight on their scales. others have not been so fortunate. The stealing of scrap metal could be mostly stopped if all scrap dealers followed the same guidlines.

I don't even make the trip down until I have 2 full 5 gallon buckets... which is at least a hundred pounds.

I watch the copper market to get an idea of when to sell. Scrap Brass has been brining around $1.80 lately.

Yep, I took a 5-gallon bucket in a few weeks ago full of deprimed, waste cases. Spent primers in a separate bucket, too. Scrap yard tagged it all the same, I came away about $120 to the good for the drive.

Easy to put up with the ID check & stuff for that kind of return.

Another thing you can do with them is to donate them to the local gun club. Any club with a board of directors that is not brain dead is already recycling brass and/or lead; all clubs need all the $$ they can get these days. My local recycler is a shooter and knows that spent primers are OK and made of brass or nickel plated brass.

Well that's all good and fine if the money from the scrap brass actually made it into the Clubs Bank Account. It's so bad here that the Club President needs it for Beer & Gas Money, to heck with the Range.........It's our continued fight with the Clubs management to get the money that is brought in by the Rifle Range to stay in the books for the Rifle Range instead of being used for the Camp Ground or Bar/Clubhouse upgrades for the campers.

Sounds a lot like our club WAS--luckily, the members, or enough of them to make a difference took control of the board. Revolution and bloodshed was averted by emergency meetings and strict adherence to Robert's Rules............

i'd like to take a five gal. bucket of military 06 cases, but i cant find depriming die that will hold up to the crimp!! any idea's will be greatly appreciated. dogdude

it will take some time. but there is always the hammer and punch method.

i would check with the scrap dealer to see if they need to be removed. mine took the cases with the primers in.

A Lee primer punch is what I use on any crimped primers in either .223/5.56 or .30 caliber, about $8 a set for the holder and punch with a life time warranty on the punch.......

+ 1 what Taildrag said, the Lee primer punch is STOUT for punching crimped primers out.

The copper stealing in our area has gotten so bad that some idiots were trying to steal the overhead distribution wiring coming into our old saw mill. It still had 14,400 volts on it. Somehow they were smart enough that they didn't get killed the first time they loosened up all the connections and were scared off by the PUD coming to investigate what was going on with their power lines. They were dumb enough to come back the next day and try it again when my mother caught them in the act. Lucky for them what kept them alive was the same thing that kept my father alive for so long, my mom doesn't even know how to load a gun let alone shoot one. That is going to change soon.

Same here, if it isn't tied down don't think it will stay around long, someone came in our yard and took 2 wind chimes and a bird feeder.

We buy scrap brass as cartridge brass. I take it with primers still in. The problem we have is w/ live ammo making it into the scrap. And by the way all our sales are calibrated and checked by weights and measures frequently. We also require ID because of the theft problems.
