Domain names

I should have wrote it down, but someone posted the government website that gave the address so someone could check names to see if they have already been taken.

If someone knows where this post is, or knows the URL, please forward it.

I would greatly appreciate it.

There are private companies like godaddy.com and Names and Addresses Inc. you can purchase domain names from.

If you log on to their sites you can check for domain names that you want or ones that are available.

Just use the search tool at godaddy.com. If you need ideas for available domains, I like to use namemesh.com because it gets tough to find good domains that arent taken.

Generally, you want a WHOIS search (or domain name lookup). There are lots of places on the internet where you can do this (Google WHOIS).

Some of these are businesses that let you register domain names (e.g. http://godaddy.com), some are sites hosted by the organizations that run the net (http://whois.icann.org/en/lookup?name=), and some are questionable. None of these are the government.

Good day,

GoDaddy plays those games. They'll expire after 30 or 90 days. A WhoIs lookup is the best way to proceed.

Once looked up 3 names on GoDaddy domain search and all 3 were available. Then a few weeks later when decided on one to use, it was taken. Then checked on the other 2 and they were taken as well. But then found out that all 3 had been bought up and were for sale. Guess by who?
..... Yep... GoDaddy bought them up and wanted to sell them......
We didn't play into there "entrapment", and picked a new domain name all together.
With that said, beware of Domain name searches, if your not planning on immediate purchases.

Believe it or not, I know someone who acquired more than 10 names in one day and I didn't understand. NOW I do.

Thanks for the heads up.

Go Daddy isn't do anything sinister, they just act as a broker for domains that have already been registered as well as their core business of registering domains. That's why you see some domains on Go Daddy selling for $1500 or more, and others for $11.99. Someone already got the $1500 domain and that's their asking price. The $11.99 one is free for anyone to get. The way go daddy presents these "premium" domains isn't exactly clear, but that's what's going on.

So if you see a good unregistered .com domain, you'd best register it quickly. Because someone else surely will and the price tag can go way up if that happens. They've been scarce for quite a few years now.
