Does your Savage action actually eject 6BR cases?

Does your Savage actually eject fired 6BR cases?

None of my Savages can actually eject a fired 6BR case. Extraction works fine. However, once the neck of the shell gets to the ejection port, the case basically drops back into the action or gets flipped around so it faces backwards. The case never gets ejected out of the action.

I read somewhere that you can cut a few coils from a 700 action ejector spring to help with a problem like this or install a Sako extractor...

Would a trick like this work to eject 6BR cases in a Savage?

It might work sometimes. About the best I could manage was to have 'em drop in the ejection port, not up in the bolt lug area.

The problem seemed to be the case being so short that it flips over against the chamber wall earlier than planned and bounces off the wall/lug area, and pops loose from the extractor.

I don't think a Sako type extractor is an option, given the extractor that the Savage already has. You might try removing the extractor, and basically taking a file, and a magnifying glass) and undercutting the extractor a bit to make it able to 'bite' a bit deeper in on the case rim, so it can hang onto the case a bit better.

Another 'fix' is to clip a couple coils from the ejector spring to weaken its 'flip' a bit... might not get them out of the gun, but it beats having them drop off so far up in the chamber that you need a dental pick to get 'em out. Ask me how I know this... :,

Another option is to take the ejector pin and lengthen the slot in it for the cross/retaining pin, so it can 'push' further. The idea here being that if it can maintain contact w/ the case head longer, it might keep the head pushed in against the extractor a bit longer.

Good luck with your search. I have one 10FP action that has been a .308, then a 6mm BR, then a .308, and now a .223. It's never 100% from the day I got it, and I finally just resigned myself to it being a single-shot, regardless of the magazine cutout in the bottom. Hope your gun isn't quite as persnickety ;)

This is not a bad thing at all! If the ejector springs are strong, the cases will be deformed at the mouth. I had a custom 6mmBR Sagave built and the factory ejector spring was so strong it did damage the cases. I took the factory spring out and removed some coils to have it do just what your gun is doing.

Be happy and shoot a lot,

Extract, yes. Eject, no. But I like it that way: easy to pick the case off the single-shot follower/ Model 12BVSS factory 243, converted to .272" no-turn neck 6BR.

OK, guys, I will just live with it. I didn't think about the possible case deformation, so I will leave things as they are.

Now, if I could only get my 223 to always fully extract and eject... :-,

I will have to try undercutting the extractor and see what happens.

My Savage M12 extracts and ejects 6mmBR just fine, but it should since it's a factory 6mmBR Norma. The point being that if Savage can make it work on a factory rifle, you should be able to also. No, I don't know what if any changes Savage made to make it function correctly. The Savage factory rifles in 6mmBR are center feed with a detachable magazine with a rear block to shorten it to 6mmBR length. Vic

Yes, a Savage will eject a BR case but it does require a simple mod. My Savage 12 20BR ejects 'em every time.

Very simple fix: The BR case is so short that the ejector runs out of travel to keep pressure on the case as it's pulled from the chamber and into the raceway. Sooooo, the travel of the ejector needs to be lengthened.

Remove the ejector and lengthen the notch by about .020". A good, sharp file makes quick work of it so don't get carried away.

This is a pic posted by Fred Moreo, sharpshooter) over at Savageshooters.com Enjoy!!!

I fixed the ejection issues my .223 had by enlarging, very slightly with a round burr, the detent on the back of the extractor. I removed material from the side of the detent so that the extractor could move more towards the firing pin and grip the rim better. I didn’t make it any deeper.

I tried undercutting the extractor first too, but that had no effect.

I have the old style copper extractor that didn’t hold the case long enough to eject. I replaced it with a new steel one but it didn’t change anything. So I figured it wouldn’t hurt to cut the copper one. It now ejects 100% of the time and the steel one sits unused.

Had the same problem with my 6BR F-Class, I just took out the whole thing, being a single shot I prefer to pluck them out than to dent case mouth and try and catch them in mid air....

Although I can't get my chamber issue straightened out, this is one that I did manage to fix. I went to the hardware store and picked up a piece of 3/32" music wire. I then proceeded to make my own ejector pin out the the 3/32" music wire. I basically did what everyone else here has said, and made it so that the pin traveled a little bit further out from the bolt face to keep pressure on the case as it was being extracted. I used music wire so that I could experiment and still have the original ejector should the need ever arise, or should I decide to sell the rifle with the original chambering. Anyway, it worked for me, and took about ten minutes per ejector pin to make with a dremel and a file. I didn't have any problems with the spring being too strong, so I don't know what to say about that.

I called Savage and they sent me a 12 F ejector, spring and pin for $11 including postage. The ejector was longer than my stock 6.5x284 ejector. It works great.
