Does this count as "big" stuff?

Today marks the 40th anniversary that we, USS Caron DD-970, provided 450 rounds of gunfire support to troops on the ground in Beirut. Seven hours, non-stop target acquisition with marine spotters on the ground. Burnt the paint off the barrel. :)

Many more rounds would be fired before that tour was done.

Yeh...it counts !!

Reminds one of Destroyer Squadron 18 operating close-in off Omaha Beach; under the command of like guys like Cpt. Harry Sanders. Sailors at their finest !!

That's awsome, thanks for sharing! There's nothing else quite like "heavy metal" from big guns.

On an aside, it looks like they could have used one of these, just scaled up a bit: ;)

Cool pic, especially the barrel.
Can we get some info on it? What round/rounds, velocity, range, etc?

Nice :) I served on the USS Arthur W. Radford, DD 968.

Were those all standard 5" rounds or the rocket propelled 5" rounds?

Standard 5" rounds. Throwing ground and air burst. Marine spotters got really excited over target hit. Especially when there was secondary and tertiary detonations.
Nice. The versatility of the 5" guns is pretty amazing. We had some rocket propelled rounds that gave us an effective range of 60 miles for ground support. Used to also run anti-air exercises with the 5" cannons, but of course there was Sea Sparrow and CIWS for that task.

Decades ago, when I was in college at one of the 5 Federal Academies, one building had two 16" projectiles sitting one on each side of the entrance on the inside. That was my first introduction to big stuff....

Thanks for getting the job done, you guys. Ooh Raahh.
I just know a lot of us here are wondering what we could neck that down to.....
That is very amazing that thing will shoot 60 miles!

Two 5"54 Mounts, one forward and aft.
As a snipe I used to help load ammo at the depot belt buckle hidden etc. when the Roark was switched from DE to FF we also had asrok. Steam propulsion is almost a thing of the past. I was always in the hole on evaps solo shell on Craig and flash type on Roark.
Or in anchor windlass RM on sea and anchor detail.
