does over charged load ever feel like an under charge? 9mm reload issue

hi!

i usually use hogdon site for hp38 data on 124g fmj 9mm but their site was down so i reverted to my paper notes which listed

berrys 124g plated fbrn 4.5g hp38 1.14coal

i know this is listed at the top of spectrum and theyre technically not fmj?

heres the thing, when i shot them they actually FELT under pressure/anemic. this was in two guns.. 50% wouldn't cycle, 25% would, 25% would double feed.

im about to load a new batch, but dont wanna have that same error..

question is:

do i have wrong COL?
did i just sling the wrong AMT of powder and scale was off?
would overpressure ever cause it to FEEL under pressure due to spike etc? it definitely wasnt a double charge or anything crazy since visual inspection looked normal.
-is it just pushing a plated bullet too fast, and causing weirdness??

thanks!!

Best to slow down and double check everything.
Don't make a big batch this next run, and don't proceed unless everything looks correct.
Loading 4.5 instead of 4.4 shouldn't be instant death in a 9mm with 124.
Do you chrono your results against expectations?
During your work-up, did you experience malfunctions?
It is hard to know from here why your loads acted anemic when they were higher than the listed Hodgdon data.

ETA: No to both of these questions. When you consider the load in the Hodgdon table above, your impression should not have been anemic.
The Berry's are typically rated to 1200 fps, but their web site will usually show the specific one you have.

thank you for your answer! i revisitet the setup, and i believe the lyman pocket digital scale i was using was not leveled, causing me to pour undercharges that day

You will be able to tell if your overpressure by looking at the primers in those cases. From what you posted I doubt very much that is you issue. Are you using a case lube by any chance or wet tumbling your brass and possibly had damp cases? If your powder drops are correct then it sounds like contaminated powder to we. Ran into that once when I didn’t let the one shot case lube dry enough before loading. Charge acted so low I had to verify I didn’t have squib rounds…..

yes I've run into that too @ wet powder from wet brass. definitely was a learning lesson.

this time around it was imbalanced digital scale which caused under charge. thanks so much for removing some of the variables for me!

I use 4.4 with Titegroup, so 4.5 gr of HP-38 sounds about right.
Maybe you might need to lube the slides of your pistol.
I don't clean mine very often and the dirtier they are the more anemic the ejection.
I just lube the slides and all is good even with a filthy barrel.
