does anyone know who recountours old benchrest barrels?

My local gunshop called me today and they have been trying to sell a couple of rail guns. They asked me if I wanted the extra barrels. I got a deal on 13 6mm and 22cal barrels (most chambered for ppc) and 14 twist. Some are HV, LV, and some a straight taper. A couple of the straight taper barrels are 28"+. I was wondering if anyone knows who can retaper the barrels for a 24" varmint/groundhog rifle? (Around HV to rem sendero). Thanks for the help

If you know the barrel brand the barrel maker may do it. anyway it no harm in asking.

The other thing that can be done is have a good machinist turn them on a lathe that has taper attachment.
either way it may cost you.

Maybe it would be better to sell them and buy a new one. there's a market for used barrels.

Takes more than just a "good machinist" that has a lathe with a taper attachment. Manual or CNC, the lathe needs to equipped with a pneumatic follow rest. I.E., supports to keep the barrel from deflecting and chattering, but will 'follow' the contour. A regular follow rest is for straight turns. Try "Longrifles.com" Chad may do re-contouing

looking into this further for you.
found a company that does that kind of work'
It was in my new precision rifleman magazine
the name of the company id GUNWRIGHT.
they profile barrels and build them up with sprays to lighten barrels for Benchrest
Maybe they can help, I don't have an Email but i bet you can find it with a search.

The safest way for this to be done is to have someone who can grind them not turn them.

the grinding process is slower, and must be done with lots of coolant, but will not harm the bbl. when done correctly. grinding does not "bend" the bbl and does not chatter.

try R. W. Hart, Nescopeck Pa

they have done this for me on a couple and they shoot fine

Retaper old benchrest barrels [with worn out lands]? Sell them for the recycling value and put the money towards a new barrel. Unless the deal was to haul them away for free, you may not have gotten a deal at all.

Here is my take. Except for the throat I have never seen the lands worn out on a BR barrel. Now most BR barrels are 22"-24" in length. If you recontour them and cut off the threads and rechamber, you ain't saved much money unless you are doing them yourself. You will also end up with real short barrels.

I know this is an old thread. Re-contouring comes up on occasion and found this on the McGowen site.
Maybe this will answer someones question later on.

Re-contouring

We can recontour barrels that have not been fluted or cut as an octagon. If it is not a McGowen Precision Barrels made barrel, we will need to know who made it before we will accept it for re-contouring. Please note that McGowen Precision Barrels takes on no responsibility or liability for a non-McGowen barrel. If something happens during the turning process we cannot and will not be responsible for the replacement of the barrel. Re-contouring non-McGowen Precision Barrels made barrels will cost $45.00 + shipping.
