Does anybody shoot a 6mmBR with cast bullets?

I learned a lot from this Forum, so, first, let me say thank you to all of you!

I would like to use a 6mmBR rifle for silhouette shooting,200 meters max. distance) and score matches.
But in my country there are no 6mm bullets and we usually have to use cast bullets.
I plan to use 95gr. to 100gr. cast bullets for silhouette. And, if I can import some, 105 Lapua Scenars bullets, for score matches).

Does anybody has shot a 6mmBR with cast bullets? At what velocity? What accuracy decrease can I expect compared to match bullets?

Thank you for any information.

grt a copy of the Lyman cast bullet handbook. now when casting the projectiles get a Gas check type bullet mold. Use pure linotype the lead and use a good quality lube made with Allox do not use softer lead or infirion lube, Now you can puse them to 2200fps without to much trouble what powders do you have available. If you can not get gas cheks load to around 1800-2000fps with allox and Lino type. I would also get the Sierra 107gr befpre i used the lapua as the Sierra works in more barrels where the Lapua can be fussy in larger barrels.

make sure you have ample neck clearence if using lead bullets. A .271 neck is used with the BR for a no turn setup but with lead dont go any closer than .174 with .276 being better as the lead bullets and lube make the cartrige larget. Also you MUST remove all traces of lead and fouling brfore using copper jacketer projectiles. you can also get old 22 magnum cases and make your own projectiles cheeply with some dies and a rockchucker press a few people have done this. I would look at getting the cheepest bulk 6mm projectiles you can and use them before the lead version as it is a diferent way to go and a lot harder to make and size good quality projectiles in 6mm that are consistant

RCBS makes a 95gr projectile their part number is #82015 and the mold is called 243-095-sp it should be a .244 finished projectile and if they are uniform you can use Lee liquid allod after seating a gas check and then shoot them unsized or get sizing equiptment and size them to.244

for powder Hodgdon around 20gr H4198 should be close start at 18gr and see how you go.

Thanks Wild Bill.
I took a time to make some calculations on momentum and discovered that the 6mmBR with cast bullets has no momentum to reliably knock down the rams at 200 meters with a velocity of 2.000 fps. To reach the momentum needed, I would have to shot it at 2.500 fps and I do not know if this is a good idea with cast bullets, even with gas checks.
Now, I am looking for the 30BR with heavier bullets,168gr. jacketed and 165gr. cast). I think I will need a 1-10 or a 1-12 twist barrel.

Maybe you should go with a 45-70! I'm just kidding around. But have you thought about a projectile with sufficent increase in mass to offset the lower velocities associated with the use of cast bullets? Maybe a .338 caliber would be better? 200grains at 1350-1800fps would probably do the job better then a .308 with 168-175grain bullet at 2000fps.

Hi what jacketed projectiles are available where you live i would look at having a BR case necked to that one if it is 308 go with a 30BR if you can get 338 go with it the 338BR or Whisper is a verry effocient cartrige. The 30BR with cast bullets will work very wel for you i would use a 10 twist and you will have no troubles stabalising the 168gr projectiles from 1000fps+

I'm thinking the 30Br using a 173 grain bullet will work. I use a 308Winchester with that cast bullet & only 10 grains of Unique pistol powder to shoot the 200 meter chickens & 300 meter Pig Silhouette. It is cheap shooting & lots of fun. mike in ct

Pay attention to Mike! I think he'd probably shoot cast bullets if he had to buy them and jacketed bullets were free. He knows what he speaks to. Helped me a lot with my 375 H&H and cast bullets.... John

If you can get the jacketed bullets imported, I'd opt for the Scenar L bullet. Do a soft jamb with that bullet and your favorite power. They are more consistent than the Sierras in my experience - and in my rifles - they shoot on par with - or better than anything I have found. To get the velocities you want - you will probably need to use gas checks and I've never shot a super-accurate load in a narrow diameter bullet with one - but that is just me. That said - while I don't think you can cast a bullet that will be as accurate as either the Sierra or Scenar, they might be good for practice - as silhouette is more about form than absolute accuracy, as you know. There weas a fellow that shows up at my local range occasionally shooting a .50 Sharps. He makes his own powder and casts his bullets. I watch him whack the 1,000- yard gong with open sights. I admire that fellow a lot!
